As small town motels go, this is a good option for an overnight stay before or after the Cumbres-Toltec Rail trip. The rooms are large and clean. It seemed to have been freshly painted a pleasing New Mexico rust color with matching bed spreads. While the beds are comfortable enough, the linens and pillows are typical motel quality.... The restaurant... More

In small towns like Chama you don't have many choices. I must say this motel is clean, comfortable, and has friendly staff. I have stayed in another Chama lodge and this one is better. Yes, we would return! More

This is the second best place to stay in Chama. The other place is a B & B and is pricey. The rooms are large and clean and entirely suitable. Under no circumstances do you want to stay at any other motel in Chama. If you can't stay at one of these options, stay in Pagosa Springs or elsewhere and... More

If you're planning to ride the Cumbres-Toltec Steam Train, this is the place to stay (although be warned - there is no restaurant there at present, despite the name). The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, the shower has plentiful hot water, and the towels are nice and thick. The free in-room wi-fi only worked slowly and intermittently for... More

We have 6 kids and needed 2 rooms. The front office staff was very helpful in getting rooms booked together and making us feel welcome. This place is a great value. The rooms were CLEAN. It's a great place to stay in Chama if you are riding the Train. More

I stayed one night prior to my Cumbres-Toltec Railroad adventure. My room was very clean and the bed comfortable. The free in-room wi-fi worked well for me, although the front desk staff said it can sometimes be spotty. There is a computer in the hotel lobby for guest use. There are 2 floors to this hotel, and the rooms are... More

This would have only been a 3-star motel if it were not for the front desk person. I had been driving a long time and needed to stop and rest at 11am. The front desk lady was so very nice and cooperative. She got me a room away from the noise and I had a wonderful rest. The room was... More

We stayed at the Motel with two older teenagers, a 12-year old, and an 8-year old. We were in rooms 220 and 221, which adjoined. There were two double beds in each room. Based on some of the reviews I read here, I wouldn't have been surprised if the Branding Iron wasn't particularly good, but I was very pleasantly surprised.... More

We stayed two nights at the Branding Iron while taking the Cumbres & Toltec train, and it was quite satisfactory. The motel isn't expensive, & the rooms were clean, large, and freshly decorated. There was some occasional other room noise (typical in motels, I think) but it wasn't disturbing. The staff was friendly, the beds were comfortable, and there was... More

Showed up the afternoon before our C&T train ride with my wife, two young kids, dog, and an emailed copy of my credit card confirmed reservation in hand - made eight months previous! Was told at check-in, "Sorry, we cancelled your reservation five days ago. We have no rooms." With "Chama Days" that weekend, there wasn't a satisfactory room available... More
