The staff was exceptionally welcoming and helpful from making the initial booking, accommodating dietary special requests to making reservations for dinner and a city walking tour our first day. We loved the option of having our breakfast served in our room, on the patio or in the ballroom. The turn down service included a small card each night with an... More

Thank you for such a thoughtful and wonderful review. You chose to visit the John Rutledge House during an exciting time: our 250th anniversary year! I appreciate your notes about our amenities, accommodating staff and am so glad that you enjoyed our sister restaurant Circa 1886. We love to show guests around Charleston and look forward to welcoming you back.... More

I would not stay here again, ever! We stayed in the carriage house which probably would have been fine under normal circumstances but was not convenient to the main house...The common area for eating breakfast or having afternoon tea was not very accomodating, It had a very 'hotel" like atmosphere which is fine if that is what you are looking... Thank you for reviewing us with ‘threes’ and ‘fours’ in all areas but service. I apologize that we did not provide you with our typical outstanding personal service. Our staff is always available to help any guests who ask for assistance with their luggage. Some guests prefer the carriage house and others prefer the main house. However, we provide the... More

My husband and I recently spent four nights at the John Rutledge House Inn. This was our first real visit to the South (not counting Disney World!), so we wanted to have the experience of staying in a historic building. We stayed in the Elizabeth Grimke room on the second floor. It was a huge room. Our room was right... More

I will be sure to share your note with Cassie and Patrice. We love offering our guests an array of breakfast entrees each morning. I am happy that you enjoyed the variety. You will... More

My wife and I spent Wed - Sat at the John Rutledge House Inn - we are from N.H. and this was our first visit to Charleston. What a wonderful inn -we stayed in the carriage house and from the moment we arrived, the concierges and support staff were extremely welcoming. The room was spacious and we loved the Tempurpedic... Thank you for reviewing your stay at the John Rutledge House Inn. It must have been a treat to escape the New England weather for some Charleston sun. I am thrilled that your first Charleston experience was here at our inn. My staff and myself are very appreciative of your kind words. We have an excellent team here - always... More

It's a great place for dogs and that may be its major virtue. The building is tired and not what one would expect at $300+ per night. Although the staff is friendly and attempt to be helpful there is not much they can do with air conditioning that does not work, rooms that need updating and refurbishing--especially bathrooms, creaky floors,... I appreciate you taking the time to review your experience. Thank you for the notes about our accommodating staff and pet friendly accommodations. John Rutledge House is quite a unique place to stay in Charleston and I strongly recommend it for couples. The prime location on Broad Street right next to St. John's Cathederal is fairly central, placing you within walking distance of the majority of the historic sections of Charleston. But be sure to wear comfortable shoes and for some things you... More

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in April. We paid $380/night and were expecting something wonderful. There were no major issues, just a sense of it being a rather average B&B. Did not feel it was spotless and the breakfast was dissapointing and industrial when compared to other places we've stayed. Three days a week (M-W-F) they... More

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. I am sorry to read that you were disappointed. We do not consider ourselves to be an average B&B. One of those reasons being, our variety of daily breakfast entrees versus offering our guests only one item. Most Rutledge House guests enjoy the freedom to decide where they’d like to... More

I wish I had read the tripadvisor reviews before booking/staying here. The 7 yelp reviews were all 5 stars, and when I walked in, and then proceeded to our room, and then ate breakfast, and then went for appetizers.... I was disappointed overall. I am very sorry to read that you were disappointed with the John Rutledge House Inn. I am however, glad that you enjoyed our central location and had an enjoyable time in Charleston. Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
