Staying at Cottage 44 was delightful! The cottage itself is cute, neat, and homey. It's proximity to Volcanoes National Park is ideal. We loved going to the park at sunset to watch the lava glow from the Jaggar Museum observation area. Afterwards, we returned to our cottage, turned on the gas logs, and settled down to drink hot cocoa and... More

What a lovely review! Thank you for sharing your experience here and recommending Cottage 44. I especially appreciate your attention to the cozy details of the cottage, as well as your nod to it's history as an old water structure -- the bedroom is a "reservoir," indeed! Thanks also for giving future visitors a heads up about the flashlight supply... More

A second visit because of our previous comfortable stay in 2006. This time we selected the Camellia Suite from the photos and were not disappointed. The room appeared freshly decorated and the bathroom, while retaining the original natural wood walls, had updated fixtures and ample tiled shower. We enjoyed the view , through leaded glass windows, of a fern filled... More

Thank you for the great review -- and thank you for returning! It was lovely to host you again, six years later. I'm glad to know you found this stay just as comfortable as the last. The Camellia is a fresh, cozy suite. The leaded glass windows provide a nice view of the lush garden and a lot of natural... More

We stayed only for a few days, but this is one of my favorite places on the Island. It was a like a trip back in time with the modern day amenities and some of the best fresh baked bread I have had in my entire life! More

Darcie, Wow, that might be the best compliment to my homemade bread I've heard in my entire life! Thanks very much for taking the time to review your stay with us. Hale Ohia is a quaint bed and breakfast, with personal service and a beautiful breakfast waiting for me in my room. It is very close to Volcanoes National Park and in the adjacent town, so you are very close to the attractions. Mike is the proprietor, who gave wonderful personal service. I recommend staying here if you are visiting the... More

We stayed for two nights in the Lehua cottage and my sister and her husband stayed in Cottage 44. My wife and I live on Oahu and we were excited to take my sister and brother-in-law from back East for their first visit to the Big Island. Where I had stayed before couldn't accommodate us and they recommended Hale Ohia... More

I'm so glad you each enjoyed the Lehua cottage and Cottage 44, respectively. I appreciate your compliments to the buildings and gardens of the estate. You're right that... More

We stayed here for two nights in the Lehua Cottage on a trip to Volcano National Park. We arrived early and the staff held our luggage as the room was not ready yet. This allowed us to leave our bags and not take the chance of having them stolen while in the park. On our return that evening, the bags... More

We're glad you enjoyed your stay in the Lehua Cottage! It was no problem at all to hold your luggage while you spent the day hiking. I'm happy you found the cottage cozy and quaint, and I appreciate your attention to its amenities. We've worked hard recently to improve our supply of hot water, so it's great to know you... More

My wife and I recently spent 4 nights here at cottage 44 which is the converted water cistern tank. After reading some of the past reviews, we had high expectations. We were also coming from another B&B on the island were we gave it an outstanding review, so 44 was going to be hard to live up to thoughts. The... More

Our cottage, booked late, was not one of the fanciest, but quite comfortable and charming. Sounds did carry from room above, but not much of a problem for us being very tired after hiking all day. Simple but lovely in-room breakfast. Unlike some other Volcano properties, where rain water is collected, they do not give separate purified water for drinking,... More

Terrific location near the volcanoes park entrance. We stayed at Cottage 44 which was a creatively decorated/designed water catchment tank morphed into a cozy cottage. A gas fireplace warmed the place nicely in the evening though the bathroom stayed chilly. Three bones of contention: 1) jacuzzi bath is advertised and nicely finished....don't plan on taking a bath though. Warm water... More
