The name of the hotel gives you the program (when the weather is clear of course!): the colors of the mountains facing the rooms at sunset is absolutely wonderful, and it is great after a long day drive or a long walk in the moutains! The rooms are clean, and very clear thanks to the large windows, the garden gives... More

We stayed 1 night @sunset motel in April 2012.The motel looked clean, a nice view to Cook mountain and modern but felt cold. There were a notice on the kitchen saying that they will charge you $20.00 if you don't wash up. I would always wash up but the way it was written made you feel not very welcoming. I booked... More

Thank you for your review. To clarify the $16.50 charge this is put in place by Golden Chain, not by us as the motel owner. In the Golden Chain Directory which all guests receive when their booking is made through Golden Chain whether through a third party like Apex. On Page 5 of the directory under "Summer Surcharge" it states... More

The staff/managers here are amazingly helpful - at the time we visited Franz Josef glacier was closed for walking upon and they tried really hard to let us know about alternative options for exploring Fox (which has all the FJ hikers as well as its own so walks fill up quickly). The rooms are modern and beautifully appointed. In the... More

We recently spent three weeks touring New Zealand, staying in motels. Some were pretty average but this one was a cut above the rest. The rooms were new and clean with everything that we needed for a very comfortable overnight stay. The only criticism I would make is that there was no car parking close to our room. However I... We only stayed here one night prior to our heli hike on Fox Glacier but we were very happy with the standard of the accommodation. The room was spacious, clean and well kitted out. The whole of the rear wall is a window/door so it was nice and light and with good views beyond a nicely maintained garden and lawn.... More

We stayed here for 1 night to look at Fox Glacier. This Motel is in an ideal location with stunning views of Mount Cook but only when there is no low cloud. We were lucky, it was mostly clear during our stay. The room was fairly basic but in good condition and clean and very good value for the price... More

We stayed here for 2 nights. Very friendly owner. Very clean and spacious with small table and chairs outside room to sit at. Basic kitchenette with microwave, toaster and electric frypan. We cooked our evening meal on one of the nights, but check what's available in your room before buying food to cook. Room was serviced the next day but... More

The welcome was warm despite driving rain and low cloud that completely obscured the "mountain view" from the room....not the fault of the motel, obviously. The room was clean and well appointed and the bed large and comfortable. My real objection was the expectation (no, demand, on pain of an extra cleaning fee!) to wash up after a breakfast that... Stayed in March 2012...my wife and I had a really enjoyable stay. When we stayed at Fox Glacier we had been in NZ for some time. We found that for the room quality (modern, clean, new furniture, decent size etc) that this was one of the better value motels we found. It is close to the city centre, Lake Matheson,... More

We stayed 1 night in Sunset Motel in a Studio room. The studio room was clean but the mattress needed to be changed. The hotel charge you 10$/day for wireless Internet which is not reasonable. Unfortunately because of the weather we couldn't enjoy the view but this has nothing to do with the Motel. More
