I would compare it to the best National Park Hotels, such as the Ahwahnee in Yosemite. The prices are similar (off-season) and the motivations are also similar. The rooms are pleasant but largely uninspired--but who plans on spending a lot of time in the room in a wonderful place like this? Service is friendly, helpful and well-intentioned, but not always consistent and not world-class. The most amazing thing about Caneel Bay is not only that you are in one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it is semi-private. There is a huge amount of space both in and out of the water that is basically reserved for a very limited number of guests. It is not like the Ahwahnee gives one private access to Yosemite hiking trails, but Caneel Bay does give what feels like semi-private access... " More >

The staff were all very friendly and helpful, food was spectacular, all of the 7 beaches offered great snorkeling, bed was super comfortable and the room clean and well appointed. Too, the tennis facility was great. We stayed in 7E and it was over-the-top. Lovel..."y with a huge private deck and just steps away from Scott Beach and our favorite snorkel spot.   "I hadn't been to St John in 7 yrs and in the past have rented private villas or stayed at the Westin; mostly with friends, colleagues or family members. I'd always rented a jeep to get around the island but the driving on St John can be challenging, so, I chose Caneel based on a friend's recommendat..."ion as she had gone solo on several occasions. I didn't want to think about anything but relaxing and checking out from my daily pressures. When I arrived and was driven around the property to my room and noticed the deer just laying about on groomed lawns, I was sort of surprised. I came to understand that I was at a very special place, one that completely pampered me in a top notch way, but at the same time was an extraordinary nature preserve. The beaches are amazing. The breakfast buffet a great way to start an active day. The staff was perfect; attentive but not in my face. I would go back in a heartbeat and felt it was worth every penny. " More >
