Do not be fooled by the low-key exterior of this restaurant (indeed it looks like a house and tables are set in the garage or the porch), this is one of the best meals you'll have in Oaxaca. We stumbled upon this restaurant by complete circumstance. While scouting for wedding locations in Oaxaca, we happened to walk into the Botanical... More

I am writing this review from our hotel room, having just returned from a fantastic dining experience at La Teca. We sat in the garden. We were the only table out back on a Thursday night. We asked for the tasting menu ( degustation) and had the following: guarnachas w picadillo, molotes de platano con cream y queso, tamale de... More

We too, had read the New Yorker review, so 5 of us, in two separate cabs, headed into the Oaxacan suburbs to check it out. One cab got there immediately and the other got lost - but eventually we all gathered at this warm, homey place. We had made reservations and were escorted through the intimate family setting into a... More

La Teca was an ordinary experience. I was with a person from the Isthmus and he said the food was mas o menos authentic. That aside, the chicken was very dry and the stuffed pepper was served cold. Everything else was very ordinary. There was nothing that earned a WOW from me. I won't return.

This was our second meal at La Teca. I am still not certain why the door is kept locked and you must ring to enter, but that is how it is. The first time we went we were with friends who had been before. Their previous experience led to their telling us NOT to order the tasting menu and to... More

Mmm...having read some criticism on here for this excellent place, I wonder if people are not always getting the full experience. We arrived on a Sunday evening and felt we were in the wrong place. Yes, just four tables in what looked like a converted garage of a house. Then, we were taken into a beautiful garden through a separate... More

After reading other reviews, we were surprised to find that the restaurant is four tables in a converted house in a suburban area with one small unisex bathroom. We were the only diners. After we asked a few questions about the menu, our waiter retreated to the kitchen. (We were a mixed group of Mexicans and Americans, all bi-lingual, with... More

Our group of six did the tasting menu, chef's choice. Started with excellent mescal, and the rest of the evening did not disappoint, from the spicy meat-topped garnachas) to the three types of tamales, to the wonderful chile relleno, fried plantains, baked mashed potatoes, pork with mole, beef estofado...to die for...this was a real treat. The waiter was friendly and... More

Nice ambience. Five of us went to eat dinner there. Two of us were served their entrees 40 minutes before the third one was, and then it took another ten minutes for the remaining two members of our party to receive their dinners! (The last three had orderred the same meals!) Three deserts were ordered. One arrived after twenty minutes... More

The best home-cooked Mexican food you will ever have. It is worth the effort to get there (just take a taxi).
