Description: A foodie gem just outside Abergavveny in the picture postcard hamlet of Cross Ash, the 1861 Restaurant has caused quite a stir among Wales' gastronomic elite. Boasting two well deserved AA Rosettes, 1861 is the brainchild of chef Simon King and his wife, and front of house lead, Kate. Between them, Simon and Kate have several years experience in the restaurant business - and it really does show. Set in a beautiful old house complete with wood beams and original fireplaces, 1861 is welcoming and comfortable yet refined while service is of the very highest standard. The 1861 menu is produced using lovingly sourced ingredients produced nearby - often on neighbouring farms or at Kate's father's nursery - to ensure traceability and sustainability.

We were very impressed by the 7 course taster menu (which we had a Travelzoo voucher for). Each course was very different and the flavours were truly superb, with such things as nettle risotto and stem ginger floating islands in a sea of rhubarb, but the stand-out one for me was the sharing plate of elderflower desserts - the soufflé... Purchased Travelzoo voucher for 7 course meal. Travelled 45 minutes to get there. The premises is quaint and full of character. Kate, at the front of house was charming and welcoming. The food was well presented and tasty with Nettle Risotto and a presentation of Rhubarb delights being highlights. Purchased coffee to finish which also comprised some sweet treats which... More

Upon arrival we were greeted by Kate, who is extremely friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed a drink whilst looking through the vast menu. We opted for the 7 course surprise menu. We were asked if there is anything we didn’t like or were allergic to. Once we were at our table which was just inside the restaurant by the window,... More

This was our first meal at 1861 and we were not disappointed. Every dish was delightful starting with my Asparagus Tempura, the best tempura I ever tasted (my husband had the Fish Soup which was equally as good) through to the exquisite Petit Fours served with our coffee...they were divine! We wish we had found 1861 sooner....we will certainly be... More

We've been to the 1861 before and loved it so decided to treat our son to a meal here for his birthday. We were greeted warmly as usual and enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in the lounge whilst looking at the menu. We happened to mention it was our sons birthday and when we went through to the restaurant Kate had... More

We had a good meal, staff were friendly but personally I would have preferred no music to the 1940's play list which seemed out of place and took the edge off what was otherwise a good meal. 1861 has a lot of competition from other notable restaurants in the area butI will go back in the hope that the slightly... Walnut Tree Vs 1861 they are on the same road and around the same price? But not with a Tastecard. With our Tastecard we saved 50%. The highlights were what you expect form a good restaurant the the food and the service, We had nettlle risotto and wild garlic panacotta to start; a taste of the garden, delicate and spring... More

We were tempted by the 7 course taster menu and were absolutely delighted with the food. Excellent seasoning, presentation and ingredients. We were asked about our likes and dislikes and this was taken into consideration. Service was great - we were kept informed about what we were eating and we were left alone to enjoy ourselves. For the amount of... More

Visited the1861 again with a friend, we enjoyed the taster menu. Half of the fun is not knowing what will be coming out for the next course!! It was all delicious, it was my friends first visit to this area and she was knocked out with the friendly welcome and amazing food.

From the first glass of near flat champagne, this failed to live up to expectation. Fish soup tasted vaguely metallic. The John Dory was so deeply coated in green crust there was no flavour of the fish itself and the dish was left. Such a shame.
