Nepenthe is probably the most picturesque restaurant there is! The view is amazing. We were there on a slightly foggy day but I can't think of a better place to eat lunch on my 29th birthday. Food was a little price but delicious!

Came here for a quick lunch on the way to explore big sur as it had come recommended. I just got a salad and a beer on the lower level cafe with the outdoor seating so I can't comment too much on the food.. but WOW!! The views were incredible! It had such a calming feeling to the whole place....

It was a must do (restaurant) on every list for Big Sur I saw, so we did it! The view is great. The food VERY pricy, but at least it was good (we had the Ambrosia burger). So at least you are getting a great view and good food for the extra $ and a checkbox next to a 'must...

The ancient Greeks used the medicine nepenthe as an anti-depressant ~ "a drug of forgetfulness" ~ to chase away the blues. It's appropriate then that this gorgeous restaurant, perched like a jewel in the crown of the mountains of Big Sur, is named Nepenthe's and is the perfect place to stop on Pacific 1 to forget your cares and have...

There's a reason this spot is the top pick for both locals and tourists. The views from either the restaurant or the cafe are simply the best in the area...and the food is just as good.
We had both brunch and dinner here over the course of the week end (May 2013) and both meals were top notch. The ingredients...

OK, so I'm guessing here it depends what you want from a Restaurant; Great location, tick / History, Tick / Outdoor Dining, Tick / Somewhere special in Big Sur, Tick.
It's quite pricey (as you would expect) and a bit of a tourist trap (as you would expect) food is quite average - in fact I hardly remember what I...

This well known restaurant is a must see in Big Sur. It is perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean with killer views. There is an outdoor seating area with a thick gorgeous wood wrap around bar from which you can dine looking straight out at one of the best views in the world. The prices are steep but comparable...

This restaurant is set high on the hills in Big Sur. The food, service and ambiance were well worth the stop along Highway 1. We even got a DVD of an interview with Henry Miller, who had a home in Big Sur.
I cannot visit northern CA without a trip to Big Sur and at least breakfast, lunch, beers, wine, dinner...........any excuse to sit there and look at the ocean. Just bundle up, cool weather most of the time with fog rolling in and out.
If you don't mind waiting for an outside table (eating inside would be just another overpriced mediocre lunch) then its a GREAT place to stop and relax as you cruise the Pacific HWY. Don't expect anything special from the kitchen and you won't be disappointed when your food finally arrives. The wine list didn't hold any interest for us, so...
