A fantastic find close to the Silver temple in Kyoto - we stumbled on Grotto one lunchtime and enjoyed it so much we went back for dinner the next day. Both the counter downstairs and the larger upstairs room are lovely places to sit and enjoy the great, inventive and beautifully-presented menu. We especially enjoyed the pork belly (meltingly soft)... More

The food was ok but really nothing special. You can find so much better restaurant in Kyoto

Reserved on the morning as seating is at the bar overlooking the kitchen with only 10 covers. The chef is very friendly and helpful, as are his staff. Nine courses which were Japanese-inspired but not all traditional Japanese. Each dish was different and very interesting making for a very enjoyable few hours, even if some of the dishes I wouldn't... More

We went to Grotto through recommendations of friends from NYC who were there a week earlier. Tadaka's (former NYC resident) restaurant is quaint and in keeping with the beautiful styles of Kyoto...and Japan. The generous and meticulously prepared 9 course March seasonal meal was not only splendid but a great value at a bit under Y5,000 - any where else... More

After the ten courses, I looked back at the menu we wrote down to keep track of - 1 of 10 dishes was the grand total I would have ordered off a menu on my own. But that's the beauty of traveling, seeing the world, experiencing new foods and leaving your fate entirely in the hands of a skilled chef.... More

Though this romantic little restaurant was a little hard to find because the sign is small, once found, it was worth the search! There isn't much space so be sure to make a reservation in advanced. It seats about 8, though I do believe there might be more rooms upstairs, but I never personally looked. You sit around the counter... More

I'm a fairly adventurous eater... and what we got here was definitely a strange array of dishes. But hey, it's Japanese cuisine; what do you expect? This is a cozy little restaurant on the outskirts of the city. You basically eat at a bar while the chef and his helpers prepare food on the other side. Intimate and friendly, the... More

Travelling by myself in Kyoto I found the thought of going to dinner alone a tad daunting but I'm so glad I sought out Grotto. It's a tiny room, seating about 12 so it's best to book and then for about $AUD60 a nine course feast of subtly flavoured dishes are served to you. The small room encourages conversation with... A friend and I ate at Grotto last week and enjoyed it immensely. The set dinner (that's really the only choice you have) is excellent value at Y4750 a person and the chef used all fresh, seasonal ingredients. As the chef lived in the States for 3.5 years, he was able to explain each dish to us as he was... More

We visited this restaurant on our trip to Kyoto for our honeymoon after reading about it in the guide book. It is located near the University and easy to get to on the bus from Kyoto Station. The restaurant serves a set menu of about seven course and each one was an experience of Japanese cuisine. They served excellent wine... More
