Kikunoi is in the perfect location, right in the commercial area, near Ponto-cho Street. It is not difficult to find. When traveling to Japan one wants to try all kinds of cuisine. Kaiseki is a must. I recommend dining in two kaiseki restaurants so you can compare your experiences. For me, this kaiseki was something unique, and special.  Kikunoi made... More

Amazing service but food wasnt as good as I expected..maybe I've expected more. We went during lunch for the bento box. Didnt seem like a lot of food at first but it kept us full for a long time. I actually didnt finish everything which I always do when it comes to 3 michelin star restaurants (i've actually been to... More

If we only had a 10 course kaiseki meal once while in Japan we would probably have liked this for the novelty of the expeirience, the lovely private room and the elaborate way of cooking. However, we went to a number of other kaiseki restaurants this time and this one would be the bottom of the list. While the food... More

Having said this, this is a very traditional Japanese restaurant. It has 3 michelin stars, we have decided we don't like this type of food. The first dish; tofu was actually outstanding and we were very hopeful of the rest of the menu. Unfortunately the raw elements were very thickly sliced and not to our taste at all. A bit... More

Wow, this 2 star Michelin restaurant delivered above expectations with a splendid 10 course dinner. Accompanied with Japanese beer (which I often find better to Japanese food that wine) we tasted new flavors and combination of sky-high raw materials which were put together by devoted and highly skilled chefs. Difficult to find just one favorite among the different dishes, they... More

Kikunoi is a high end (it would be given it has three Michelin stars) kaiseki style dining restaurant. For the less initiated, kaiseki comprises lots of small courses of traditional Japanese dishes. The restaurant is a traditional Japanese house with lots of private dining rooms, tatami style. We had a lovely room that overlooked a gorgeous Japanese rock garden and... More

we were 2 couples, and had a private room. Kikunoi Honten, is on of the most famous Kyoto style restaurants in Japan. although chef Yoshihiro Murata was not there at the time of our visit, his wife was taking care of hosting guests. Service was impeccable! Food, was great. it could be a bit sophisticated for regular guests, but if... More

This place is not cheap, but one eats very well. We loved our private room and would recomend this place to anyone. You best be an adventurous eater though. Our theme was: "No idea what this is but it is really good!" Photos tell the story.

From the moment you are ushered into your private dining suite you know this will be a memorable evening. Kaiseki is a series of small Japanese dishes elegantly presented. Every course is an art piece and a unique taste. You must be willing to try new food to enjoy the evening. The chefs wife stopped by our suite to see... More

It has been around for a long time and we normally avoid Michelin star restaurant in Japan (they are mostly off the mark). Kikunoi must have been great at one time but not this time. It looks tired - the place, the service and the food. The best is the spring bento presentation with the mandai. I know it is... More
