Food quality and taste has been going south ever since they became very popular many years ago. I'd still recommend the Maoming Lu branch especially to non Chinese speaking foreigners who want to try spicy Hunan food. Usually busy during dinner so best to book in advance. Ribs are a main staple and though a lot of reviewers complain about... More

Hunanese food can be great, but the speciality (the ribs) were just OK. The service was not pleasant and the staff seemed almost annoyed to have us there. The real kick came when we settled the bill. The tea that was freely given was not free. In China, tea is usually a courtesy at a restaurant, here they charge for... More

The portions are fairly big so its hard trying different things without having to take it to go or wasting it. The ribs were good but the yutou was spicy as hell; I needed to take breaks between bites.

I have found this restaurant overrated with hit-or-miss food and service . The popular cumin-covered ribs (ziran paigu) were too dry and disappointing. The spicy fish head (doujiao yutou) was very tasty and recommended. The eggplant dish was average. The local beer was properly chilled and good. The restaurant has a comprehensive menu of Hunan dishes, the prices are very... More

It was a small restaurant in French Concession. Most of their dishes are spicy. I heard that's the Hunan style. It's funny because we attended a Chinese cooking class in the morning nearby, a very very good one called Kitchen by the Garden. And after the cooking class, my husband and I decided to stroll on Hengshan Rd. And we... More

Enjoyed a lovely meal at this place. The ribs were awesome as was everything else that we had here. All the food was was fresh, well presented and plentiful. Drinks are also reasonably priced and the place has a good, hearty eating vibe to it, Definitely worth it for well priced and tasty food in down town shanghai.

Trip Advisor is so great- another great find. First night in Shanghai after getting abused by the weather, taxi and hotel we wanted some GOOD food. I'm Chinese but know nothing about Hunan food so in no way am I an expert. I know what I like and I'm not afraid to tell ya! Good sign is that the place... More

The rave reviews are justified. The atmosphere and service are great, the food is (truly) authentic and not pricey, and there is 1 local beer which is nice and cheap to wash the food down with (listed separately on the menu, not with the expensive / international beers). The ribs receive good reviews for good reason, and I've tried to... More

Sorry to say you all missed THE best Hunan food in Shanghai as of 10-15 years ago this place was truly a one room dive on Maoming Lu. Then the food had a clarity and preciseness that is long lost. The ribs were the best ever and none of the dishes were greasy like they are now. Every plate then... More
