Visiting Berkeley for a short while, I went to Ajanta for a Sunday lunch, and took a deep breath as we entered the beautiful dining room, filled with fabulous fragrant hints of the kitchen. The walls have very interesting paintings and the lighting is modern with an Indian touch. I was so hungry I couldn't think and just ordered one... More

Ajanta is a very popular local restaurant- "everyone" loves it. They have an interesting menu.....however, I thought the food and service was just average. I asked for my chicken to be prepared "moderately spicy" and it was rather bland. The waiter had a bit of difficulty understanding our order and, as a result, prepared one incorrect entree. We had to... More

My wife and I have been going to Ajanta for years. The food and service here are top notch. After finally traveling to South India in 2010, I can now see how much more authentic Ajanta's food is then the normal Indian restaurant. They have monthly specials that we always try and their standards are fantastic. I especially like their... More

I frequent Ajanta about once each month, as they have monthly new specials. The owner scours India for new and interesting recipes that can be prepared with ingredients available in California. These always are very interesting and some are as delicious as any Indian food I have ever eaten. This is not the place to go for lots of steam... More

I reviewed this restaurant once before but TA said I didn't give a detailed enough account of our dinner, so lets try this again. The saag paneer (aka palek paneer) had very little cheese and the spinache tasted almost like frozen spinach heated up. Their version of butter chicken had no sweetnees in the sauce, quite bland indeed. I think... More

I showed up without a reservation, which is not a good idea. Very casually dressed, as it IS Berkeley, we were cordially seated after a brief wait. The decor is elegant. The service is efficient and unobtrusive. The food is excellent.

This is my favorite restaurant in Berkeley, CA. I was going to Indian restaurants only for the buffet during daytime until discovering Ajanta. This is the place you can eat varieties of Indian gourmet food with feasible prices. This is not just best Indian but best restaurant for me. Period.

Ajanta was recommended to us by Indian friends. We loved it. My husband, daughter and I opted for the non-vegetarian Chef's Tasting menu. We were all quite pleased. The tandoori scallops were amazing as our first starter and it kept getting better. The wine list was a bargain, too. It is well worth a visit.

Ajanta's cuisine is distinctively different Indian - a new twist that is most likeable and tasty. The service is for the ultra-patient, however. We had to keep flagging down a waitperson just to get some water, get our order taken, etc. It was a weeknight and the place was full. When they did arrive, the attitude was universally short, uninvolved,... More

Visited on a Tuesday night for dinner. Interior is smallish but comfortable, nicely decorated; service was courteous and efficient. It's a good thing we made a reservation, but no crowding was evident. The menu includes a good selection of local bottled beers. My dinner of Punjab-style curried black-eyed peas and shitake mushrooms was excellent, likewise my wife's salmon from the... More
