a tourist trap. Overly expensive and among the worst food I have had in my 2 years in China. The only nice thing were the peanuts served as an appetizer. Be courageous and enter one of the neon-lit local restaurants, you will have much better food, a true chinese experience at a 5th of the price.

We went there twice and beside the very friendly stuff and nice decoration, the food is amazing: tasty local dishes without any bad surprises and a lot of westernized things (chicken without bones for example) we really enjoyed.

The place is tastefully decorated. The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms were were equipped. Although the inn gives the impression of an authentic ancient inn by using traditional Chinese furniture, it also provides Internet connection which was convenient. Tian Yuan Kui is one of many lovely old Courtyard hotels in Pingyao. The benefit for foriegn tourists is that it has English speaking staff and offers very nice foood in pleasant settings. A good place to go for a beer or internet access as well.
