Great food, but the ambiance is lacking. The restaurant is dirty, old and a 1950's diner type, but the food is terrific.
George's is the place to go for tenderloins and fries. It's a tiny local diner that serves up delicious, greasy, food. I can't say that I have ever actually had the chili...
You'll either love or hate the Chili King, depending on your opinion of what makes a restaurant great. If you are looking for a shiny white antiseptic appearance, you may want to head over to one of those chain restaurants. But you are looking for a unique, and nostalgic experience steeped in charm, this is your place. A rustic greasy... More
Step into the time machine, and travel back to a time where you watch the cook prepare your food, you can overhear the most interesting neighborhood gossip, and the food is just darned good. At George's, the food is delivered faster than at McDonald's, is fresher than Subway, and has more personality and history than MaidRite. The chili is that... More
Called in an order and was treated very very rudely. They said make it quick they didn't have time to even ask for a last name. Chili was sour. Onion rings had pretty much no onions at all. Use to love to eat at the greasy king but breaks (I guess saves) my heart they are a ship with 50... More
After eating a coney dog and a coney hamburger today at George of the chilli king on Hickman in des Moines Iowa I can honestly say the food, service, staff and overall experience was grotesque to say the least. After sitting down and going over the menu I was badgered with poor jokes from an overstaffed diner style kitchen. The... More
I was very disappointed w/the entire experience! Dirty, Greesy, un kept staff, food was nothing to write home about! Price was rediculous! A coney and a small onion ring - No drink! $7.14...............Never again! Sorry to say it but the place in it's day WAS wonderful, now is ruined forever in my thoughts. My second attempt to give them a... More
George the Chili King has been around for decades! The place is old, yes. . . but that adds to its charm--it's just like it was back then; only older! The Chili is the same homemade recipe they've been using for years and the Cheesburger Coney Style is the best thing in the world! If you can't accept this place... More
The place is not new and has seen a lot of wear & tear over the years but the place was sanitary, the staff polite, they wore gloves when handling the food and washed their hands often. Nothing was hidden everything was prepared right in from of us. I'm particularly fond of their chili & coneys but have on occasion... More
If that's your thing...I was in a hurry and remembered this old greasy dive and thought a coney sounds pretty good. 3 minutes and 6$ later I had 2 great greasy coneys in a bag and was out the door. I was surprised at the speed and efficiency here but a little disgusted by the atmosphere and the regulars at... More
