My husband & I always order the beef chimichangas & they are always delicious. The last time we went tho they charged us $2 for my tap water which was not impressive.
Great food at a quality price. Very nice employees and a quiet atmosphere! Convient to dine in or carry out. Dine there as often as I can.
The atmosphere, cleanliness and the quality of food is absolutely outstanding! my wife and I eat there once to twice per week with never a complaint.
There's a shortage of ethnic places in Oakland, so this one stands out. The food compares favorably with other Mexican places around the U.S., the service is very attentive and the prices are reasonable. Salsa and chips are addictive. Good Mexican beer selection.
We are locals who eat out quite a bit, although we had never tried El Canelo before. Having four little ones, the kids meals for $1.99 lured us in! I'm not a big fan of Mexican food, but I thought their food was actually pretty good. The staff was very friendly, and the food was served promptly, any parent can... More

In Mexico this is a delicious Mexican white cheese with chorizo sausage. At El Canelo it was similar to heated Velveeta with tasteless bits of meat. It... More
This is one of our favorite local places to eat. Love the chips and salsa served as an appetizer, huge menu with a nice descriptive page on the back if you are not sure what something is! The owners and wait staff are genuinely hispanic so you know the food will be too. I get the shredded beef chimichanga and... More
The only good things about this place was our pleasant waitress and the warm tortilla chips. Everything else, from the tacos to the burritos were completely bland and tasteless. The taco shells were the type you buy at the grocery store. The beans that surrounded my burrito were watery and had no flavor. I make better Mexican food in my... More
The nachos were very good; however, could have been a bit better with some jalapeno peppers to "spice them up." Ambiance more like a traditional restaurant; however, overall everyone seemed to enjoy their food!
