The history of a restaurant matters if the service, food, and value improve. Al's was first opened in 1934 and has survived the economic peaks and valleys better than others. During our visit, the service was top-notch -- the employees could not have been happier...to have us there. We were greeted immediately when we arrived, our waitress was available whenever we needed something, and a second employee checked on us while we were eating to ensure that we were enjoying the food. We didn't have to wait long for our meal. While my burger was flavorful, the thin edges were overcooked, making then hard and crunchy -- inconsistent with the rest of the burger. The fries were evenly cooked, and the chocolate malt was very good. The value, however, missed its mark. Al's is listed by Trip Advisor as Cheap Eats when it is not. Two burgers, two fries, a shake and a malt were billed at $36.50 before tax. This price is more typical of a New York City lunch. Even though inflation is taking its toll on many establishments, Al's is considerably more expensive than advertised. We liked Al's -- the location, the atmosphere, the staff, and -- generally -- the quality of the food. Be prepared, however, to pay more than you expect.More
