Description: For 100 years, the Algonquin has been greeting and lodging the country's most prominent writers and literary personalities, as well as the leading figures of the American stage. The hotel is best known, perhaps, for the members of the Round Table, a group of luminaries who had in common both the ability to fire blazing witticisms and to withstand being on the receiving end of them. The tone they set during their daily meetings set the literary style of the 1920s. After World War I, Vanity Fair writers and Algonquin regulars Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Robert E. Sherwood began lunching at the Algonquin. Though society columns referred to them as the Algonquin Round Table, they called themselves the Vicious Circle. "By force of character," observed drama critic Brooks Atkinson, "they changed the nature of American comedy and established the tastes of a new period in the arts and theatre."

We popped in for lunch and found the atmosphere and ambience just right: polished dark oak and a sense of literary history. The food was average and somewhat overpriced: $103 for a just-OK shrimp salad, a generous roast beef sandwich and a burger and fries. Our waiter was less than ebullient and provided drink refills only when asked.

Great ambiance in a room full of history. We enjoyed our breakfast, had great service and chatted with all of the waiters who stopped at our table. It was a very relaxed meal, and we enjoyed every moment.

Fabulous! Delicious breakfast menu. Wonderful service. Sit under the Round Table painting, you will be inspired to write for the New Yorker magazine. The food is pricy, but the atmosphere is worth it.

The food is good. No surprises (it works both ways). I had two dinners both were good. One with Salmon (in the fix price menu) and the other one was Tuna steak (a-la-cart). The fixed price menu is good value. For a-la-cart it is less attractive. Atmosphere is quiet and relaxing with good privacy. The service is excellent.

Truly disappointed with the food and the service. I was looking for a great experience and found this place lacking. Not really worth the trouble.

Service below average, prices much above average -- but great atmosphere. Had a cheese omlette for lunch --- overcooked, too much strong cheese. Glass of wine cost more than the lunch.

We chose the Algonquin Round Table for it's rich history of hosting such literary giants as Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Robert Sherwood and Edna Ferber...just to name a few. The delightful menu was icing on the cake and the price was an unexpected pleasant surprise. The Shrimp Bisque was rich, creamy and chock full of shrimp, a perfect beginning that... More

The original historic round table is gone so it has lost a bit. Food is ordinary and expensive. I just tried breakfast and I hope other meals would be better.

We dined at the Algonquin on my sister in laws suggestion. This old hotel held fond memories of times past for her. We all were sorely disappointed. Apart from being extremely over priced, the food was mediocre and service lacking, to the point of our party being ignored. Would not return.
