3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2013 NEW

It was a nice little restaurant with good service. You can have free drink (beer & coke) or a glass of wine at only NZ$5 during happy hour (4:30pm to 6:30pm) if you order a dish afterwards. But the food there was average. The curry was just so so without much flavour, the vegetable soup was average.

I'm surprised this is so highly ranked. Service was just ok, the food was really quite expensive and also just ok. Seafood chowder was quite nice, although heavy on the cream, and light on the seafood. Bread and dips proved to be an incredibly small serve.

It would be so easy for Alice Mays to get better reviews, just get the staff to understand what the menu is, what the specials are and if there is a happy hour charge the correct price. We had a lovely meal, but the waitress seemed to have a little difficulty understanding English and the menu but she was doing... More

... and we ate at several excellent pubs! Varied menu with many excellent choices, friendly staff, convenient to several of the hotels in Franz Josef. We ate here two nights and were very pleased with both meals.

If you are paying upwards of £10 for a main meal, you don't expect a plate full of chips and some chewy steak. I felt like I was sitting in a Little Chef or on a pensioners night out. Service was also abysmal. Fair to say I didn't like it.

I really want to give Alice Mays 3.5 stars, but 3 is not really fair so they get four. We had the sliders and roast of the day - pork. The garlic bread lacked butter, the sliders were basic, but the pork roast was really good, perfect crackle! The staff had trouble understanding our order as their English was not... More

We walked around town looking at menu boards, then came across Alice Mays up a side street. What a great find! This is an older style pub type restaurant with a view of a mountain. The walls are decorated with farming artefacts, pictures and stories of the original owner and her family, very entertaining and interesting. Love the fireplace and... More

This small restaurant was very busy. The staff were friendly. Don't take booking unless larger party. So had to wait approx half hour. The service was good however the food was disappointing. Particularily the ribs. Would try over the road!

We ate here following the recommendation of our hotel manager and were not disappointed. We had BBQ ribs and chick pea patties and were very pleased with both the quality and quantity, even forgoing our intended desserts as a consequence. The atmosphere was good and the service efficient and friendly. Not cheap it's true, but not unreasonable either. We'd definitely... More
