"I realized when I ate at this favorite place last night that my first trip to this restaurant was 41 years ago as a grad student! Start off with the house specialty, a Chimayo cocktail (and be sure you have a designated driver if you have more than one). We always order the most traditional entrees..."--carne adovada burrito, rich and meaty, or delicious red chile enchiladas (order them with a fried egg on top!). Chimayo is a chile growing center and famous for its red chile. Quite a few tasty vegetarian specials too. The best sopaipillas on Earth--I always ask for mine as dessert. Fabulous historic home with terraced outdoor seating and excellent music on the weekends. Now if only the service would match the ambiance!

"This place is about 25 or so miles from Santa Fe, so if you have transportation you should take the time and make the drive, not a real scenic drive so focus on the reward, from the time you pull in you start to feel what your experience is going to be, an authentic New Mexico
eating fiesta. My wi..."fe and I were lucky enough to be seated on the upper patio out back, at lunch time it was a shady oasis. We were promptly greeted by our waitress, dressed in early traditional dress who took our peach margarita order and returned with truely fresh fruit tasting drinks, could've spent the whole afternoon sitting in the shade just enjoying the drinks. This was followed up with a small combo plate, shredded beef taco cheese enchilada with the green chili.
My wife said a one word description would be excellent. I had the small cheese enchillada plate with the red sauce, if someone says the sauce is authentic, I would'nt argue it's a great combination of ingredients to be so rich and flavorfull...

"One of my favorite places to eat when in New Mexico. Even though this is off the beaten path, it is well worth the drive from Santa Fe or Taos. The food is excellent and the inexpensive. The Prickley Pear Lemonade is exceptional and the margaritas are to die for! The service is outstanding. If ..."you are there when it is nice out, be sure to sit outdoors and enjoy it. My husband usually hates eating outdoors at restaurants but enjoys it at Rancho de Chimayo. The atmophere is wonderful -- everyone is very friendly. I always enjoy the food, the people, perusing the jewelry and pottery that is on display and for sale. Expect a wait if you get there right at the lunch hour as the place fills up. It is worth the wait, however, and is usually not too long. Don't miss eating here if you have the chance!
