My wife, son and I checked into the Kontokali Bay Hotel on the 27th May 2012.
There is no doubt the hotel is very nice and in a wonderful setting. The gardens are beautifully kept as are all the public areas in the hotel including the beach and pool, you really get a nice feeling knowing your going to spend your stay in Corfu in this hotel, made even better by the very nice and professional staff.
We chose the bed and breakfast package as this suited our holiday criteria more, as we like to travel and not be to tied to one place. This I think turned out to be a good option. The hotel provide a varied breakfast menu (buffet style) with fresh fruit, breads, yogurts, cereals, cold meats and cheeses..... and American style bacon and sausages with a number of different egg options. You will find something nice to eat there every morning although it may not be what you are used to at home. In the afternoon you can have lunch down at the beach bar/resturant and again the food options were fantastic with freshly prepared kebabs, king prawn and a verity of other hot and cold dishes..... Be warned!!! this food and drink is not cheap compared to the local tavernas and other beach bars 20-30 min walk from the hotel. Hence we were glad we hired a car because this journey was reduced to 5 minutes.
We decided on a bay view room as our 2 1/2 year old son is obsessed with boats, cars and motorbikes ect. The room to be fair was clean. Was it 5 star? 'No way'! I feel the room severely lacked any type of luxury as with the bathroom although the view and sunsets from the balcony were stunning, it didn't get near a Premier Inn or Travel Lodge on the room alone and just didn't seem right in that hotel a real shame we thought. Obviously there are room upgrades at a cost but I don't feel that is an excuse in a five star hotel, either it's all 5 star or not a five star hotel at all. The only thing 5 star in our room was the price of drinks from the mini bar and €3 for a coke or sprite and a small can of local beer even more, I found a little annoying as the surroundings didn't accomodate the price.
We didn't have dinner in the hotel at all, as we wanted to try the local food and really capture that true Greek experience and we wasn't disappointed once. The resturants and tavernas in Gouvia were excellent. They made us feel very welcome, the prices were very fair and the locals love children but remember this is a good 20-30 min walk from the hotel.
If you are taking small children you may find they could get bored very quickly as there is no kids club or a place to take them and play so think carefully before booking if you don't have car hire.
The hotel location is brilliant with a 15-20 min transfer time from the airport and 10 mins from Corfu town which is beautiful and the hotel do run a free bus daily.
So my opinion on the whole of the Konokali Bay Hotel. I would definatly stay there again. It is without doubt a lovely hotel in a great location with great spa facilities. If your looking to relax with a good book and be pampered this is the perfect hotel on one of the pretties Greek islands I have ever been to. I personally would advise car hire and from as little as €105 for a week it's a no brainer. So is this a true 5 star hotel? The most part yes but personally over all I would say 4* I hope this has helped and its my honest opinion.
