I stayed at the Alexandra Hotel on July 26 to the 27 2014. I booked online and arrived at the hotel at 3:40 pm on July 26, 2014. I was informed of an extra $100.00 dollar charge because I was paying by debit which I did not have to give them. They therefore requested for me to leave my ID which I think is illegal but we will be letting the Better Business Bureau know about that. They then were willing to let me cancel my reservations if I gave them $50.00 which I did suggest. The proper thing would have been to let me cancel at no charge because there is no mention of an extra $100.00 dollar charge. In the end, I had no choice but to leave my health card or go to a show carrying a bag with clothes and toiletries. I did not end up sleeping there because I missed the last train to union station and therefore only used the shower in the morning. I checked out at approximately 9:00 and I had to wait for someone to check my room before my health card was given back. I showed up at the hotel sober and I checked out sober so there was not reason to treat me like someone that was going to trash the place. As well, I showed them my license when I checked in and they had my health card that really at 35 years of age what did you think I was going to do to your room. I choose this hotel because my ex-husband and I had stayed there numerous times when we were together but in 6 years things change and the treatment I received was uncalled for. It might explain why my ex only rented a room here once for his visit with his son and has since changed to a different hotel. I will not rent a room here again and I have a few more shows to go to but then based on the note posted at their front desk not to take reservations but peoples names and numbers so they can rent to U of T students first they don't want tourist business anyway. Just to note I am a single mom just starting a career so I am not making a lot of money yet and that is why I didn't have an extra hundred dollars. I paid $157.00 for my room.

Room tip: Have more money then the actual room price to pay for the room.

Hello,

The Alexandra Hotel requires that all guests checking in have either a credit card, or leave a cash deposit at the Front Desk. This is to cover phone bills, room charges, and extensions. The deposit is fully refunded at the end of the stay. This is standard hotel practice, and we do advise guests booking online (in the fine print) that they will have to provide a credit card or deposit on check in. We also advise guests of this practice if they call us and ask.

We are sorry to have made you upset but in the future it would be best to call any hotels prior to check in to ensure that they do not require a security deposit if you are against this practice.

Thanks for leaving a review. I will double check the travel websites to make sure our guests are made aware of this requirement.

In a great location close to Queen Street West. There is a lot to do nearby. We stayed here because we were going to a concert at Lee's Palace. The front desk staff was very friendly. The room was dated but nice. Had a fridge, stove, microwave, etc. Would be great if staying for longer than one night because it had laundry facilities as well. The linen was not very clean -- I found somebody else's hair on the towel -- I have red hair and the hair on the towel was black and curly. Otherwise a great place to stay. Would definitely go back again.

Thank you so much for the review. I'm very sorry you found hairs on your towel, and we have brought your review to the attention of our cleaning staff so that they will know to be more careful in the future. Many guests find the cooking and laundry facilities convenient since many hotels lack these amenities, and we will be glad to have you stay with us in the future.

On May 29 I phoned and booked two rooms, I was given confirmation numbers and they also emailed as requested the confirmation numbers. We went to check in and were told they had no record of the rooms being booked, yet one of the men there did admit to remembering the phone call. After a little while we were offered one room for a party of 4 to share as they stated they were fully booked. They were told that was not acceptable and suddenly they offered us two rooms, when questioned as to why their was now a second room one of the gentleman said he would take his chances. We proceeded to pay and after we payed we were asked for a further $100 per room each as an additional fee of some sort for the room for the night, which I thought was rather odd as this cost was not mentioned when booking the rooms . It seemed very shady to us and I did tell them that had this charge been mentioned at the time of booking the rooms it would not be a problem but the timing just made it seem rather shady to me. We requested our payment for the rooms be returned. The only reason this motel was even considered was the fact that it was recommended by a nearby Hospital, the hospital was informed as to what occured. I will not recommend this Hotel to anyone.

We are very sorry for the problems you had when trying to check into the hotel. We work very hard to manage our availability and obviously made a serious error with your reservation.

As with all local hotels we do require a security deposit, and accept credit, debit or cash. This is refunded on check out.

Again, I apologize, and hope it was not too much of a problem to find alternative accommodations.

We stayed here for 1 night. We had read the comments on tripadvisor and were a bit sceptical, but needed a cheap place to stay in Toronto. the hotel itself is in a back street with its own (paying) parking lot. their are safetycamera's which is a plus. Once inside you get the feeling of being in an appartmentblock instead of a hotel. the lady at the counter was nice and gave us some directions on sights to see in the city. The room itsself was outdated but clean. there is a kitchenette with dishes and cutlery. and 2 -small- beds, a double and single. You kind of get the feeling of bein in a hotel of the 80's that hasen't changed one thing.
Ok for the price but I get the feeling that their are better hotels / motels in Toronto for the same price

This hotel was great for us. There was a private parking lot (though you do have to pay for each day of parking) so we could walk to Kensington Market and Chinatown. The room was spacious with one full size bed and one twin bed in our room. Rooms are devoid of any decor. Wifi was good. The hotel is secured by a locked front door that each guest needs to unlock to get into the building. There is a park next to the hotel.

There was some noise at night from the street or the park. The a/c ran well.

I wouldn't mind staying here again; the location and price can't be beat, but if you are looking for a hotel versus just accommodations, look elsewhere.
