"OMG, Mum, Dad, this room is soooo cool! Look! at the drums at the ceiling"; these were some of the cries let out by our 11 & 15 year old daughters. It was a hot day and we (parents) were glad to see a table fan in the room when we reached the room on the 3rd floor after we had climbed the steep stairs. Everything was clean in the rooms and all was provided (showergel/towels); Our advice would be to bring some earplugs in case you were given a room near the street (we had streetnoise till 2hr30 AM); Breakfast was plenty and spoilt for choice (fry your own eggs, croissants, cheeses, juices,...) and only for 6,5 euro! Location was perfect (we were able to park rightoutside the door for 36 euro for 24hrs - parking meter is pay by VISA and is located over the bridge towards the police station); Close to city centre and Rijksmuseum. We will be back!

Room tip: 4 beds in a room, so it was hot in the summer and keeping the windows open is noisy; two beds were right up against central heating, so that could be very hot in the winter? The higher up you are the more steps you have to climb but the further away you are from the bar (breakfast room) on the groundfloor.

My friends and I stayed at the BackStage Hotel for a total of four nights and we had a fantastic experience. Besides being on the top floor (man those stairs are steep), everything was excellent. We were given great restaurant recommendations and we were walking distance from everything! The beds were made everyday and there were fresh towels! It was great value for a great location. The wifi worked perfectly and we were able to get a decent priced taxi from the airport to the hotel.

My expectations for this place were high considering the price we paid and what they claim to be on their site. Unfortunately, as others have said, it is very similar to a hostel with hotel prices. No air conditioning and no ventilation. Very hot! You get charged to use a credit card (which wasn't specified before hand until we were walking out the door to catch a flight). The bathroom appeared dirty and smelled of old urine (we had our own bathroom). Very disappointing for the amount of money we spent! Lastly, the pictures on their website do not reflect, in any way, what the rooms actually look like. Very deceiving.

The location is excellent, being just 300m from Leidseplein and it's nightlife. It felt overpriced though because there's no breakfast included and you have a shared bathroom. The free wifi was a nice perk, and the guy at the reception gave us an easier and cheaper way to get to the airport than taking the train, there's a bus that runs right past the hotel.

Room tip: Try get an upstairs room, there are a few in the basement that have small windows that open onto the noisy street

We stayed one night at the Backstage Hotel, having chosen it on the basis of its location. It is located on Leidsegracht and so is within walking distance of the town centre. However as we were given a room in the basement of the building, the only windows in the room opened directly onto the street at ankle level, so we could hear every car/bike/person that went past the hotel. No air con so no chance of shutting the window. Shared bathroom was clean, reception staff were effective without being friendly.
