We found ourselves at this hotel after arriving at the Swissotel next door and finding that they were fully and our booking of 3 weeks previous had been cancelled! That is a review in itself.....
We initially were given a large but very clinical renovated room on the first floor. The room had some peculiarities in that the bed could be folded up into the wall and a large screen could be unrolled in its place. While no doubtedly the room was set up for small meetings or seminars when not being used as a bedroom, it had the ambience and feel of a porno movie set, complete with 16 overhead spot lights. (not far from the red light district, after all).
After spending 1 disastrous night in there, we complained and were shown an older, unrenovated room on the 4th floor which had a much warmer feel about it, with windows wrapping around 2 sides of the room. Thanks to Manager (Vivien?) for her understanding and helpfulness. We really loved the 2 nights we had in this older room.
We understand this room is due for renovation soon- please don't! It has lovely warmth and character just the way it is.

No this is not the set for porn movies but a respectable 100 years old hotel founed when these kind of movies where still inexistant :) .
The first room you had is indeed a boardroom which can be used for small meetings. As it is also the largest room of our hotel, we can understand that we have to work more on the decor when it is used as guestroom. Also our new rooms are in the same style but the effect is completely different as the other rooms are not a big and have different touches of colour. We liked to hear that you enjoyed the old style of rooms and that you had a pleasnt stay with us.
We hope to welcome you again in the future
Yours sincerely

We chose this for four days pre-cruise this past August because of reviews here and the fact that the management replies to all reviews, which indicates they care. The hotel is in a great location less than a block from Dam Square and a short walk down the Damrak from Central Station. We walked it with a ton of luggage no problem. If you are going to be walking/riding public transport to all the attractions there is no better location. The hotel staff was very friendly and helped with good restaurant recommendations. The rooms were decent sized. Ours was not redone but the bed was nice, the linens clean and crisp, and the TV worked They have free basic wifi too, which worked well for our purposes The bathroom was small but it was new, spotlessly clean, practical and modern. Our second floor room looked out over a busy side street but the room was very quiet. Good quality and newer sound-proof windows. The first floor hallway has been redone in a pretty classy manner so once they get to the second floor the rating should go up!

Friendly and helpful staff. The manager personally bid us adieu, no doubt amused by the amount of luggage we were dragging around. We would definately stay here again.

Having quiet often passengers going or coming from a cruise we are ineed used and amused when we see the huge suitcases they are carrying. For those passengers we recommend paying a little more and book one of our superior rooms so that they have enough room left.
We are pleased to learn that you have enjoyed your stay and your visit to our city. Cruise passengers are very important for our city and we are proud to have a beautiful Passenger Terminal for sea cruises.
We hope to see you back in the future
Yours sincerely

My family recently had an opportunity to stay at the De Roode Leeuw in Amsterdam. The hotel is conveniently located about a 10 minute walk from the train station. From the hotel you can easily walk to a large variety of great tourist attractions, including museums, restaurants, canal boats, and much more. A large and reasonably priced grocery store is also very close. The hotel was well maintained and the staff were all very friendly and more than happy to help with suggestions on great places to visit. The size of our rooms were fine and the bathroom was obviously recently remodeled with a very clean modern feel. The hotel has a restaurant, although we did not eat there. It seemed like it was busy at times and the people seemed to be enjoying the food. The television had a decent variety of programs to watch at night and free wi-fi was available 24 hours a day. A couple of minor negatives included a single and somewhat slow elevator and a few odd steps, in the middle of the hallway leading to our rooms, that was easy to trip over. In summary, a moderately priced, safe, clean, and friendly hotel, located in a very desirable area of Amsterdam, close to many attractions. I would definately stay there again and would recommend it to friends.

It was a pleasure to learn that you have enjoyed your stay at our hotel. The city has certainly changed a lot in the 100 years of our existence but we are still in the middle of all activities such as cultural, shopping and sightseeing. We hope to welcome you again in the future

I'm a frequent traveller and recently spent three nights in this over-rated hotel. Having stayed at other hotels in the area I definitively expected more for €190 per night. My room was recently renovated (I believe) but completely void of charm and character. It was so small that there were hardly any room to sit at the cheap melamine desk or walk around the beds. The LED spots gave an awful light that unfortunately didn't make up for the complete lack of sunlight. There was no light or view from the windows, only an ugly brick wall. Paying that much for a hotel that prides itself of having four stars in Tripadvisors, I was appalled by finding the floor covered by dust bunnies. The second day my room was as filthy as the first and it was not cleaned until I notified the reception.

Before the hotel manager writes a standard excuse, let me make it clear that this hotel offered one of the worst experiences I have had at comparable hotels. You only get one chance to impress a guest. I definitively recommend other travelers to avoid this hotel in the future.

I sincerely regret that we could not meet your expectations and that you found this one of the worst experiences you ever had. It is a pity that, as a frequent traveller, you only share your past bad experiences with others on Tripadvisor and do not suggest any hotels through your good experiences.
I sincerely apologize that your room was not clean on both days of your stay. Cleanliness is something we value high and most reviews confirm this and I do not understand what has happened with your room.
As to the decor, there is no hotel in the world that can match the taste of everybody. Our new rooms were desighed following the latest trends in hotel design. As we care for the environment with our GreenKey Gold label, we are not allowed to use anything else than environmental friendly LED lights.
Not all of our rooms face the street and some overlook the inside courtyards but these rooms have the advantage that they are exremely quiet although situated in the heart of the city.
And as far as the roomrate is concerned, rates are flexible and depending on the occupancy rate. I presume that you stayed with us during a citywide congress when hotelrooms are scarce.
We understand that we will not have the pleasure of welcoming you again but fortunately our city has a wide chooice of hotels so every taste can be matched
Yours sincerely

We have just stayed at this hotel for the second time, and enjoyed our stay just as much as we did the first time we stayed there when we visited Asterdam in 2010. Some of the rooms are quite small, but we have found them quite comfortable on each occasion, and since we were only there for three nights, the hotel was just a base, so this didn't matter too much. The overall standard of cleanliness was very good, and had we not found a small piece off rubbish left under the bed by a previous occupant, we would have rated this hotel as excellent for it's cleanliness. One comment that i would make as to the facilities in our room is that the tea and coffee making facilities are a bit sparce. Two teabags and two coffee sachets per day seems somewhat meagre, (but then maybe that's because we are british and we like our tea!). Once again, we found the staff very pleasant, helpful and friendly. The location is great for public transport should visitors choose to use it, but as we prefer to get around on foot, the location really is ideal as you can easily walk to all the places you may wish to visit, whilst fully enjoying the surroundings and atmosphere. I was sorry to read the managers statement on a previous review announcing that smoking rooms will no longer be available from January 2013, however, i am sure that this will be good news for non-smokers. Overall i would not hessitate to recommend this hotel to others, and i would happily use it again myself.

Room tip: Front of hotel views are the most pleasant, and if staying for more than a long weekend, consider paying a little extra for a larger room.

First of all let me apologize for the fact that the cleanliness of the room was not 100% perfect.
We wer epleased to learn that you enjoyed your stay and regret that we cannot offer rooms for smokers anymore but this was done after a long reflection. Hopefully this will not mean that we won't have the pleasure of welcoming you again in the future. We look forward to welcoming you again

With best regards
