Having read the reviews we were straight down to Thomson (who booked on behalf of Olympic) and tried to change our hotel, to one we'd stayed in before, however for an extra £2,000 that we could ill afford we had to stick with our first choice.
We were a party of 3 ladies. On first arrival the lobby area is very nice (on closer inspection it is very tired) and the guys at reception are very nice. I think we may have been a bit more fortunate in that one of the guys at reception took a liking to one of us and took some time to chose our room.
We were taken to our room (No.2139) it is tired and in dire need of decoration, but it is ok. There were 2 single beds in the room. About 30 mins later another fold up bed was wheeled in, the mattress was a proper mattress, albeit one that folds, and was actually softer than the main 2 single beds, so nothing to really complain about there. Air con was sufficient. There was no hot water for the first couple of days but we advised reception and this was then fixed. The cleaner did a great job on a daily basis, and I lost count on how many times our beds were changed. We also had two occasions of towel art, which really is an art in itself.
2 of us are vegetarians and due to this there is not a great deal of choice. The menu is solely directed towards Russians and the locals. The main resturant next to the lobby basically supplies the same staple foods every day with some variation, evening meals are supposed to be themed each night but it was hard to make out one night from another. Breakfast is good and lunch is much the same as dinner. The restaurant at the beach is nicer but very limited.
PLEASE NOTE THAT STOMACH UPSET THAT LASTS FOR MORE THAN 2 DAYS IS A BACTERIAL INFECTION AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FOOD.
The other restuarants are the Italian Restuarant, Seafood Restuarant (at the beach) and BBQ restaurant by the pool. WE did not try the seafood or BBQ so i cannot comment on those, the italian restuarant is very nice....BUT.....booking can only be done from 9-11am, there is a MASSIVE queue every morning and there willbe people there from around 8.15 to 8.30 waiting for the desk to be open. There are minimum spaces in the italian restuarant and so they go in super quick time.
Works, but ittermitantly, from our room it worked ok on the balcony. I believe this is due to the sheer number of people hooking up to it. At 6am in the morning its very speedy even in the hotel room. I was using an iPhone.
This hotel is mainly directed at Russians (who are the rudest people I have ever had the misfortune to meet), Polish (just as bad) and the local Egyptian people.
Unfortunately the staff do their very best at being attentive but it is very hard for them when they are being beaten down by the rude attitudes of the Russians and Polish people, who have no concept of queuing or even basic politeness, subsequently, often they are having a 'bad day'.
The water doesnt appear to be cleaned very often, leaves are collected in a net, and for the most part of our 2 week holiday the water was lower than the filter level, however it was filled in the latter part of our second week and there seemed to be some work going on with it. The bars do only serve drinks in very small plastic cups, you can have as many as you like. May I suggest that you take a thermos cup with you, for one it keeps the drinks cooler for longer AND you get a decent sized drink.
There are plenty of sunbeds, and parasols (most are torn and broken but the staff do there best to put them together and do a bit of diy on them)
Forget it...the annimation team do their best, but they have limited resources and the 'theatre' has been tucked around the side of the pool area without a bar very close and no comfortable seating, its an auditoriam type set up, wide stairs with cushions to sit on.
All in all it is ok here, after all you get what you pay for to a certain extent, most of the english guests we spoke to (there arent many) had all paid about £200 less than we did each, we paid £800 in the january sales. It would appear that the place is under new management, the staff were saying that conditions were getting better and it appeared that they are slowly trying to spruce the place up a bit but this will take some time.
We were allowed to keep our room on the last day for free, our departure was at 6.30pm there were no issues about our bands being cut off, to point that we left the hotel still wearing them.
There appears to be a "new extension" you should ask about this.
