I stay on extended trips at highly regarded hotels in Asia. The Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur is top notch in making me feel at home when I am there for two weeks at a time. The most impressive attribute is the warmth of the service from the moment I walk in to when I leave a few weeks later. The doormen, bell captain and reception staff are warm and attentive, without being too intrusive. The service in the room is quiet and efficient, and the room cleaning is done well in an amazingly short time (unlike other hotels where it can take 45 minutes to an hour, here it is done in around 15 minutes). The evening turndown service is similarly done in about 5 minutes. This helps me not feel interrupted while working in the room. and every time a hotel staff member enters the elevator, they are courteous and smiling. The business center is also very efficient and friendly (even though the charges for copies and printouts are a bit steep even for 5 star hotels). The club lounge is spacious, quiet and has excellent service and a spectacular view. The staff there will make small talk, but again without being overly intrusive. They remembered me by my second day and right away on subsequent trips.
The club lounge and 2nd floor breakfast are excellent, as are lunch and evening cocktails at the lounge. The hotel also offers excellent buffet options in the lobby level, at a surprisingly reasonable cost. The dining options are excellent, although the drinks in the MO bar seems a bit steep (especially some quite average wines). The air-conditioning in the lobby lounge can feel positively frigid if you are sitting under the vents which is unavoidable at the larger tables, but that seems common in Asian hotels and better than feeling warm so I can't complain.
The gym is large and underused (which I like) and the equipment is in good working order. There too, the warmth of the staff comes through.
The rooms are spacious and tasteful, though not as technologically advanced as the Mandarin in Hong Kong. But the wireless internet worked reliably, and TV, phones, and plumbing were always in perfect working order. The thermostat was a bit unreliable, and the room could get too warm or too cold if you can't figure out the sweet spot on the thermostat. I can live without a TV in the bathtub or electronically controlled curtains, which the MO in Hong Kong has.
Asking for a late checkout at 2 pm even after a two week stay turned out to be a bit challenging as they were fully booked, but on the day I was supposed to depart, the hotel came through.
Overall, always a great place to come back to at the end of the day. Its the service that makes it a cut above other hotels and a joy to return to. The only recommendation I would have is to give the rooms a technological upgrade. But I wouldn't change anything else, especially the friendliness and prompt service. It is rare to feel as well cared for in a hotel, even in Asia. I look forward to returning every time.
