The Blue Jay lodge offers a great place with a great view, and for a reasonably cheap rate at $60/night, it is fair. Although the stairs leading up to the rooms can be steep and lengthy to climb on a full stomach. But it still is a good place to stay for the price. There are beach access within a two minute walk. The other township are within striking distance, if one drives. Lots of great white sandy surfing beaches and foreign invested restaurants within a mile of Blue Jay lodge. And the howler monkeys always adds a little excitement to the stay. lol. A pleasant stay over-all.

Run by a lovely Costa Rican family (values statement - everywhere else I stayed was expat owned, I think). 2 minute walk to the ocean, located on the hillside with the jungle. You are in nature here. You will have surprise visitors in and around your cabin. It becomes fascinating but also mandates you be an outdoors enthusiast to stay here. Lovely pool, wifi in the central area and they just strung a hammock in the shade from which I write right now. My advice? Save your money, enjoy nature and stay here. Then get A/C midday from the lovely French bakery in town and amazing fish lunches from Product C in the shopping plaza and know your fancy purchases are financially responsible. Bring bike lights (or purchase from the shop in town) and rent an inexpensive bike from the Lodge for the week. Rent your surfboards from Mal Pais Surf Camp just up the road, where you can get your board at any hour and catch every sunrise from the water. With these tweaks this is the perfect unique stay. (Note - noise in that rating is due to monkeys and the scampering of iguanas and squirrels in the leaves and on the roofs; very quiet from a people perspective.)

Room tip: Just make sure you are OK with nature before booking here!

Incredibly relaxing. So glad we stayed here for four nights near the beginning of our Costa Rica trip for some quality hammock time. Compared to other lodging in the area, I think Blue Jay is especially well located--private, with beach access, but still central--and has great amenities--hammocks!!, a pool, and hearty breakfast.

Definitely ask for one of the upper level "ocean view" cabinas...it is a haul to get up there, but soooo worth it.

Easy to rent bikes from next door. $4 taxi ride from the "crossroads."

Recently stayed at the Blue Jay Lodge during the peak season in Santa Teresa. Our visit was a bit of a mixed bag, we felt there were several things we were not aware of when we arrived.

Pro's: nice lobby area and pool, very comfortable to hang out in during the day. Breakfast provided is simple but nice, and apparently there is sometimes ceviche in the afternoon. David is very friendly and helpful to guests. The view of the ocean from our casita was stunning.

Cons: We stayed in the Congo room, which was essentially a treehouse. Way way way up the mountain, it has slatted walls with netting, that's it. The building/room is slanted downwards and the rails on the balcony are ropes strung on a pole. The accommodations are absolutely bare minimum. The shower barely had a stream, mattresses were cheap and rickety, several large gaps in the screen between the wall where large critters or animals could come in. For the price we paid this was "roughing-it" much more than we were prepared for. Also one morning our water was shut off. And the wifi is only in the lobby, does not extend to the casitas. The location is not as close to town as we thought either, nearly a mile down the road. There are bikes to rent that help but they are not in the best condition and make for an "interesting" ride.

Overall I give this a so-so rating, I wouldn't recommend against staying here but if we had known some of the above we probably would have stayed elsewhere for the $$ we spent.

Room tip: Views at the top are nice but a heavy price to pay for the hike up there. Rooms are too hot to be in during the day anyways, go for a shaded room near the base.

This was a lovely spot to land for our first couple of days in Costa Rica. We would have stayed longer but we had other plans. We opted for the upper lodges on the hill side $50/night. The view was definately worth the hike up the hill and the uneven steps. An open air room on three sides with screens. The only critter we encountered was the tree crab that would pop in and out from the shower drain. A few small spiders that the crab ate after we lovingly sent them to the other side. The deck had two hammocks and two nice wooden chairs. You could see the ocean and it was like being in a tree house. The Congo Room did have a slight tilt to it. But it seemed to be very sturdy. The railing on decks were only rope, so not suitable for young children.
The main lodge had nice table and chairs where you could get wifi. The breakfast that was included was your typical meal of beans and rice, eggs and toast with juice and coffee.
We loved the little pool and spent time there each day. The owners have had this property for about 40 years I think. David's 2 children stopped by the pool and swam with friends. they were a delight to watch and invited us to walk to the beach to enjoy the sunset. David offered a nature walk for $5 the next day and it was fun and interesting. We will definately come back to the Blue Jay Lodge. For a longer stay we might consider a room with air conditioning and a Kitchen $60/night.
For the above prices contact them directly. We paid a little more $ to go through any where Costa Rica.

Room tip: Upper level rustic rooms are unique and fun.. We love this type of thing. If you are looking for a conventional room, perhaps one of the ones with a/c would be more suitable.
