We've spent Christmas at Vahine Island and I've to say it was one of our best stays.
When you go there make sure you don't book the overwater bungalow as you have much more privacy at your own beach house.
The view to BoraBora is just amazing, the snorkeling at the riff close by is breathtaking. Small and bigger sharks to be seen :-)

Room tip: Don't take the overwater bungalow if you would like to have privacy

The island was marvelous. I loved the coral gardens and my boyfriend enjoyed the opportunity to wind surf. I think they added a pool since we were there which would be nice. On the days that the weather was bad it would have been nice to swim since on such a small island there is little opportunity for exercise. The staff was friendly and the food was delicious. The bar and restaurant opened a little late on some nights. We went at the beginning of the rainy season so the weather could have been better but you can not fault the resort for that. The scenery and water was dreamlike. All and all I would probably rate this as my favorite vacation. We visited a similar island resort in Fiji a few years back and it was very nice but this was really a little piece of paradise.

It is harder to determine whether the staff or the food is the best part of this resort, or maybe it the incredible views, or the easily found privacy. But I will lean towards the staff. This is a very small resort and the staff you encounter will all warmly approach you, introduce themselves and remember who you are. They are all about creating a memorable experience. The food has been mentioned in these reviews and it is as good as everyone says. Breakfast starts to be served shortly after you sit with fresh fruits and breads. You then have a choice of eggs (how you want them), meats or cereals and of course the famous home made vanilla yogurt.
Dinners are an event in terms of delectable courses and one could easily skip lunch between the large breakfast and dinner. But the selection of lunch items is remarkable given the size of the resort and limited number of guests so don't miss to many lunches.
Do not worry about being at a small resort that almost seems like Gilligan's Island in its use of local materials for the construction as the staff will accommodate any kind of request for activities including snorkeling or fishing trips or the use of various water toys at no additional cost. if you are lucky, Roi will guide you on your snorkeling trip because he easily finds things we overlooked like an octopus or eel.
I somehow broke the toilet seat the first night in our room and it was repaired the next morning before I could even mention it.....the staff cleaned the room while we were out and must have told management. I was pretty impressed.
The only less than stellar experience was a common experience in each of our high end destinations in the FP and that being you may not be alone at night due to little invaders.

Room tip: There are three overwater bungalows that are situated relatively close to each other. I did not see the inside of them so I cannot really comment on them. But it seems to me that the beach bungalows I believe offer much better privacy. The views from them are very nice as well with both water and garden facing porches on the units. We had Fare Ono and found it to be very private with a wonderful view of the ocean, another motu and the lagoon.

Vahine island is one of those places that you will always remember and will become the "happy place" that you dream about when the stress of life and work creeps back after vacation. The island is beautiful with white sand beaches, turquoise blue water and a vista of Bora Bora off in the distance. But what makes this place so special is the staff. They really make you feel at home and go out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay. Roy, the beach boy, is full of information on Polynesian culture, vegetation and ocean life. He went out of his way to pull out an octopus from the coral to show us and went on a sting ray hunt with the boat so that my husband and I could see one up close underwater. The wait staff are also amazing! There's a great little bar that is perfect for an afternoon beer or pre-dinner drink. The homemade infused rums are delicious and I suggest trying a few. As everyone said previously, the food is 5 star quality and gives anything you can get in a fancy Toronto/New York/Paris restaurant a run for its money! But this is better because you can enjoy high quality food, while sitting by the beach and barefoot! The entire island is very relaxed...don't pack more than a carry-on suitcase you will not need it!
One night we were lucky enough to be there for the Polynesian show, which was great! Because the place is so small, it was very intimate and lots of people got up and participated.
I must say, that while we initially requested a beach bungalow (which were full), we were very glad that we got an OWB and found them to be very private. On our last night, there were 2 sharks (they're harmless) circling beneath our glass coffee table which was really cool to see!
What I can say is stop reading reviews and book now! You will not regret it. I just hope that this little slice of paradise doesn't get too popular because we want to come back!!

Room tip: The farthest overwater bungalow was very private. Highly recommended.

Vahine Island is the true essence of paradise. From the moment you are greeted at Raiatea Airport with a private boat, to the magnificent colour of the water as you round the Island of Tahaa, then motor up to the jetty to be welcomed by our host Laure, you just sense that your holiday is going to out do any previous expectation. Vahine Island is not your big resort with shops, cafes, day spa's ... it is simplistic luxury. Our overwater bungalow was lovely.... the colour and clarity of the water with the sandy bottom is breath taking to say the least.... and the food was simply the best I have ever eaten, anywhere in the world. We love food and one of our main criteria for this trip, was magnificent food. It delivered in all meals - Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Vahine Island is not a busy place. A max of 18 guests in 9 bungalows. You need to be able to entertain yourselves with snorkelling, a range of water sports, island hopping ... a snorkelling tour is conducted on most days for 2 hours with Roy and he is able to find fish and creatures that you just don't see. We also went out fishing and there are day trips over to the island of Tahaa. A combination of snorkelling, reading, fishing, swimming and eating filled our 5 days but could have easily carried us through 7 - 8 days. This place is relaxed but attentive. The staff are fabulous, hilarious and soon became our friends. This is not a family holiday but time to spend with your better half. We very much intend on becoming part of the 'returning guest' list because I just don't think that your could ever find anther place as stunning or lovely as Vahine Island. PS No Mosquitoes!

Room tip: We stayed in an overwater bungalow which was simple luxury but I would be happy to stay in any of the bungalows. You don't need to request the last one etc because there are so few people that you feel private where ever you are.
