We enjoyed a couple of drinks in the Bourbon Bar after dinner. They have Kentucky Bourbon Barrell Ale on tap which has a different taste than in the bottle (a tip from our guide at Heaven Hill). The bartender was very accomodating, allowing us to have a second drink even though she was supposed to close.

Stayed one night and it was enough to know there were spirits among us. Did the ghost walk with Ms.Star and got the history if the place.
We were allowed to walk freely around the place at night. We conducted an armature investigation. The flash light test worked.
Beds were uncomfortable, no remote to the TV. But it was the haunt we were after. AND WE GOT IT! We would go back.
Food excellent! Especialy breakfast. Home cooking- well done.

We stayed here on June 8, 2012 on our way to Lexington. When we called, the receptionist was sure to tell us about the band that would be playing in the bourbon bar directly beneath the room and that they would be playing until 1 a.m. We booked the room and upon check-in we were asked if we had been told about the band. We stated that we had and then we were asked to sign a disclosure notifying that we had been informed - apparently people have had problems - which I can understand as the band (5 Horse Johnson) was loud - they were good as well. We stayed in the bar until they quit playing so it wasn't an issue for us.

The hotel is historic. If you're looking for a Hyatt or a Hilton, this is probably not for you. We truly enjoyed our stay. The staff (and many others in the Bardstown area) were very nice. We stayed in the Washington Irving Suite and it had a Jacuzzi big enough for 2. There was a small sitting area with a corner fireplace and TV/VCR. A small hallway with a desk took you to the room with a queen size bed and another TV/VCR. The character and history of the building is what makes it worthwhile. There is a small balcony overlooking the front entrance. Relax and read the visitors guide while sipping on a fine bourbon. We heard Friday nights are hit & miss in the bar but Saturdays are usually more populated.

The breakfast (included) was standard (eggs, bacon, biscuits & gravy) and we did not have lunch or dinner. This place is small and pleasant with a nice selection of fine Kentucky bourbons. We may have even felt the presence of Mary Todd Lincoln while we were there. I would recommend a night or 2 here, but remember... the band is playing below the rooms and can be load if you turn in early.

The location is great if you're touring the bourbon trail.

After reading many of the reviews for the Tavern, it was a toss up if I would book a room or not here. And, I can see all of the comments are accurate - the great, good and the not so good. When traveling I have a motto: You get what you pay for. And, this was true in this establishment - the price is low because they have room for improvement.

The best:

Terrific building with great history. And, in a wonderful town.

Fantastic staff - the young lady at the desk was beyond kind and helpful - really. I have not found this approach to service in a long long time. That was the best part.

The worst: It needs work. It needs some new furnishings. It needs some renovation. And some deep cleaning. It is not your usual B&B and if you want luxury - this is not it. If you like quirky and history and can manage less than ideal amenities, then you will enjoy this property.

I slept well and since it was a week day they did button up the place early but if on a week-end, I can imagine you might as well stay up and party with the crowd. The guests are alone after 9 p.m. There is a flight of steps and no elevator. They have a nicely positioned patio for guests that overlooks downtown which provides a nice perch to enjoy. But, it needs work....

The food I had was just average - nuff said about that. You go here for the building.

We stopped at the Old Talbott Tavern while on the Bourbon Trail, and it was the perfect meal for a day filled with whiskey tasting. The food is generously portioned, and you can have healtier options like a salad, or get a ham & cheese sandwich that looked superb at the table next to ours. My favorite thing was the fried dill pickle chips. They were just fantastic - a great salty / sweet combo with the russian dressing-like dipping sauce.
