We stayed at the Harbor Inn for 2 nights while on vacation. Stone Harbor is one of those quintessential Jersey shore beach towns that just never seems to change. VERY family oriented, lots of quaint shopping, restaurants, and the main attraction - the BEACH!
The Harbor Inn is located about 2 blocks from the beach (each block is like 2-3 houses long, so it's a very short walk). It is a very standard older hotel - small in size, double beds (not too comfortable), TV, minifridge, small bathroom with NO counterspace whatsoever (we're talking a pedestal sink here). But let's face it people - you are here for the beach and the beach only, not to spend time at the hotel. And quite frankly, all the other hotels in the area are basically the same.
They do have on-site parking (which can be a premium during the summertime), and you are literally across the street from the main part of town with all the shopping, food, etc. To go on the beaches in Stone Harbor you must purchase a Beach tag - the Harbor Inn will provide them to you for a $20 cash deposit per tag, and will reimburse you the deposit on the tag's return.
One important thing that you will not even see on the Harbor Inn's promotional brochure - this hotel does have a small, outdoor pool. The owners of this hotel also own the Seaward Hotel right next door which has a big pool right in front. They charge more for the Seaward, and they do publicize that pool. But if you stay here, just walk around to the back of the building and you will find the pool. Lounge chairs are also there, and at times makes a great alternative to the beach (especially if you have children that are afraid of the waves, etc.)
I absolutely LOVE Stone Harbor - I can't say enough nice things about the place. But as far as lodging, the pickin's are small, and they aren't noticeably different from one place to the next. Location is primarily the key. So understand that going in, and you won't be disappointed. Besides - you're there for the beach remember?!
