This past April my husband and I went on a home tour in West Virginia and spent the night at the Bavarian Inn. Although I had booked a mid-price room, we were upgraded to a room in the Augsburg chalet. We had a small veranda overlooking the river, a fireplace, and a whirlpool bath - lovely! The only negative was some traffic noise from the bridge spanning the river, which can't be avoided. I recommend the rooms in the Augsburg, as it is furthest from the bridge. Our dinner was absolutely excellent, and the wine list included some very reasonable selections. Service was efficient and friendly. Shepherdstown is only a 1 1/2 hour drive from Washington DC. (Take I 70 north to 340 west through Harpers Ferry.) In Shepherdstown, you can rent bikes and kayaks , and there's a nice bike/walking path on the opposite side of the river, along the canal. Don't forget to take a short walk on the Appalachian Trail from Harpers Ferry. We definitely plan to return!

Room tip: The ideal room would be in the Augsburg chalet, top floor, left end unit. It would provide the most quiet and privacy.

My husband and I stayed that Bavarian Inn in one of the Potomac River View Rooms for my 40th birthday weekend. The room was spacious and extremely cozy! The view was magnificent and the food at the main house was delicious! There are so many great places to tour nearby to keep you busy while you are out. We also enjoyed the ambiance of the in-room fireplace and the breathtaking view of the Potomac River from our private balcony! Oh and the bed... most comfortable night's sleep I have had in a very long time! I can't wait to go back! IF you want romance - go to the Bavarian Inn!! I will certainly never forget it!!!

Room tip: Loved the Potomac River View Room!

We stayed here for the third time in early April 2012; we save this as a treat for special anniversaries. As always, we greatly enjoyed our visit to the Bavarian Inn! Our room overlooked the river, and, although the early spring weather was still a bit chilly, we sat out on our balcony several times - what a great idea to have the extra tall chairs so guests can see over the wooden balcony! Dinner on Saturday night was wonderful - we were so stuffed afterward we could barely walk back to our room! We also ate at the Sunday brunch and that was fabulous too!

We had seen some older reviews indicating that the rooms were worn, but our chalet must have been recently redone, because our room's decor was fine and very clean and attractive. Everything in the resturant and grounds seemed in great shape. We were sorry it was too chilly to eat on the new outdoor patio!

Our only suggestion would be to consider offering a serve yourself breakfast buffet, perhaps for a nominal fee, during the week; when we ate in the dining room on our last morning, which was a Tuesday, the room was pretty much deserted and the food was slow to arrive, with several items listed on the menu but not available. That was the only down note to our stay, though; everything else was wonderful!

Room tip: Stay in the chalets overlooking the river; beautiful view and very private.

My husband and I stayed at the Bavarian for 3 nights for a class reunion. We had a spectacular time in Sheperdstown, and the Bavarian was the perfect jumping off point to hit all of the historic spots nearby. The service at the Bavarian is top notch and the food is great. The pricing is so reasonable as well - a very good value for any traveler in the area!

Room tip: We stayed in one of the river view rooms in Bodensee, which I definitely recommend.

The hotel was perfect for an alumni weekend visit. Our room was very comfortable and offered us a beautiful river view. The staff was beyond accomodating to our needs and paid attention to detail, ensuring our experience was a positive one. The hotel was convenient to many nearby activities, restuarants and shops but I must admit we found ourselves very content and ending up spending all of Saturday evening dining at the Inn and enjoying cocktails in the Rathskellar. Make sure to stay for the Sunday brunch! We look forward to returning again.
