Some friends recommended the Blucher House as an alternative to a weekend package at a high-rise bayfront hotel that we were considering. We'd never stayed at a bed & breakfast before and weren't sure what to expect. From the moment we arrived at the George Blucher House we were smitten. The house is a meticulously restored 100+ year old Victorian structure professionally decorated by interior designer and owner/hostess Tracey Smith. From the fantastic collection of original artwork, the antiques, the oriental rugs, crystal, silver, excellent library including some remarkable Texana items....not to mention the extensive video library....there's a little bit of something for everybody. Unlike sterile or sometimes stinky hotel rooms, we felt like pampered guests in an elegant mansion-which is exactly what we were.
The first afternoon we found homemade oatmeal cookies still warm from the oven waiting at the foot of the stairs. The next morning we awoke to the tantalizing aroma of one of Tracey's spectacular breakfasts. In the Dining Room the table was set with china, crystal and silver, fresh flowers, candlelight and a dizzying array of knives, forks and spoons. The first course was a half grapefruit, broiled, then piled high with macerated fruit and topped with a lightly browned meringue. Now we know what that one funny spoon was for! The main course was a souffle with a big puffy hat filled with ham, onion and spinach accompanied by grilled tomatoes and homemade sausages with fresh rosemary and garlic. We were hard-pressed to finish but loathe to leave a single morsel. As we were making small talk and preparing to push away from the table here came dessert. Dessert with breakfast-that was a first! A decadent New Orleans-style Bananas Foster complete with ice cream and puff pastry for a fresh twist. We couldn't put down our spoons-the flavor was superb!
We're not sure if all B & B's are like the George Blucher House but we'll never stay anywhere else in Corpus Christi, that's for sure! Thanks, Tracey, your place is truly one-of-a-kind!
