Horizon Guest House is AMAZING. Everything everyone has said is right:

-Clem is as gracious and knowledgeable and welcoming a host as we've ever met
-His breakfasts were the best we tasted on the island - and we stayed at many of the top B&Bs - we are still fantasizing about the fresh mango-banana-cinnamon pancakes with his homemade passionfruit syrup. Drooling.
-The view is better than you can possibly imagine. Sweeping ocean vistas. Exactly what you picture when you think Hawaii.
-The whole place is in commune with the gorgeous nature around it. It's unbelievably beautiful and peaceful. You will never want to leave.

This was simply an extremely well-run inn. There was the perfect mix of privacy and attentiveness to guests. Laundry if we wanted it, snorkel equipment, an impressive DVD library, etc. But we could also hole up in our spacious, lovely room or take a dip in the infinity pool. Clem has thought of everything you could possibly need, and if somehow he hasn't, he'll find a way to make it happen.

Well worth staying a little bit out of town to be someplace as incredible as this! Thank you so much Clem! We are coming back!

Since you have already seen all the other great (and somewhat verbose) reviews, i'll just try to keep this short. You can't blame them because you just want to tell everyone about this place!

First: THANKS FOR EVERYTHING CLEM! BEST B&B EVER!
Miss you guys (Bruno, Bebe and Coco (resident moo))

What I like alot:
The View
Infinity Pool, Hot tub
Lawn, Farm, Hillside
Isolation from the rest of the world
Clem's famous breakfast (fretatta!)
Clem's full service, friendliness and attention to detail
Laundry, stuff for guest to use on roadtrip and beach

Little things to improve:
The mattress is getting a bit worn.
Pool area can use a little touch up.

We'll come again !

Completely amazing! Our trip to the Horizon Guest House was unforgettable from the moment we walked in the front door to the day we had to leave. It's difficult to adequately put into words just how breathtaking the view is from all angles of this place, since you really have to physically be there for all of your senses to take over.

The views- My husband and I arrived just as the sun was beginning to set and Clem was so gracious to delay our tour of the property, so we could take in the sunset. It was so beautiful. I remember how I literally took a deep breath when I first walked in the front door and saw the expansive coastline. It's all in how Clem (the owner/host) presents this to his guests. He designed a wall of windows in the living room, lanai and dining room that retract and open to the world outside. The elevation of the Horizon Guest House sits at around 1,100 ft. above sea level, which allowed me and my husband to feel like we were on top of the world, while also providing quiet from the surrounding town.

Our suite was spacious and clean. Our bed may have been the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in and we really enjoyed the electric blanket for the cool nights. We also liked the concrete floors and big shower, especially after a long day at the beach. Clem added a nice architectural touch to the room by adding a tray ceiling with adjustable, soft lighting. As many have said before, each suite was angled from the other suites, so we had privacy from our neighbors. Our particular suite had steps that led right to the georgeous infinity pool and attached hot tub.

In addition to the stunning views was Clem's delicious gourmet breakfast every morning that he served buffet-style from his grand, circular kitchen. He made some of the best food we had on the island...from fresh local fruit (mangos, figs, papaya, star fruit, bananas, oranges, etc.) to whole grain oatmeal cereal (with fantastic spices and dates), to polynesian sweet bread french toast to a mushroom and shrimp fritatta. And I must mention the fresh Kona coffee that was brewed every morning.

We loved Clem's dogs, Bruno and Bebe. They were so sweet and friendly, and Bruno even greeted us one morning on our lanai.

As others have said, the location is about 40 minutes from the town of Kailua Kona and about 15 minutes to the popular snorkeling area of "Two Steps." We went there twice and really enjoyed all of the interesting fish and healthy corals. We also drove a little further (an hour or so total drive time) to Hapuna Beach which had beautiful white sand and turquoise water. We loved the Clem provided snorkeling equipment and beach bags! This was a nice added bonus.

Clem's place also has a fully stocked laundry room which we really appreciated, too. We were able to do a load of laundry before we ventured onward to Volcano and it saved us so much time when we returned home to the mainland. Again, we really appreciated this feature!

Clem has such a great instinct of knowing when to be around and when to give his guests privacy. We really enjoyed getting to know him and the other guests staying there. We made unexpected friends on our trip, which created an even better memory. When it was time to leave, we really felt like we were leaving family. We have traveled all over the world and feel that the Horizon Guest House may be one of the most beautiful, unique places we have ever stayed, plus the most incredible value for everything that you get for the rate.

It was an experience we will never forget and we hope to visit again very soon. Thank you, Clem!

If you were going to design your perfect hideaway home, it might end up looking something like the Horizon Guest House. Beautiful expansive views of the southern Kona coastline, and on a clear day you can see the 8000-ft peak of Hualalai. The website photos do not do the verdant property justice. Adjacent to the property's own gardens is an Ohia forest, wonderful native trees with red (and sometimes yellow) flowers. The infinity pool makes you feel like you are floating above the ocean and the attached hot-tub/jacuzzi section makes nighttime soaking and star gazing a must do. There are 4 rooms all with a private lanai, they are immaculate and spacious. The owner Clem has taken the time to label all the switches in the rooms so you always know where to turn something off or on. The bathroom has a large walk in shower, there is a refrigerator in the room, king or queen bed, terry robes, included WiFi, and a french Press for coffee in case you awake before Clem does at 600 AM. The main part of the house includes large comfortable rooms that are open to the amazing view and have sliding screens for night. There is a sound proofed media room with over 800 movies for you to choose from (although I could never be bothered to give up the jacuzzi and stars). Central to the main room is the top-chef kitchen area where Clem creates his scrumptious breakfasts. Each day we had fresh fruit plates (mango, papaya, figs, pineapple), hot cereal (whole grains and dried fruits), and some special creation (mango-cinnamon pancakes, mushroom frittata). The most wonderful thing was that Clem catered to our schedule. Unlike so many B&B's where you have to plan your day around what time breakfast is served, or miss it, Clem will find out what time you want breakfast and make sure it is ready for you. One morning we needed a 630 breakfast, no problem, another day 600 AM coffee, we left for an early snorkel and came back for an 830 post snorkel meal.

An additional feature is the great grilling area by the pool. Clem has it stocked with spices, plates, and cutting boards. There is a great health food store about 15 miles away, you can find easy items to grill, fresh local produce for salads, and decent bottles of wine or local beer. Allowing you to eat outside listening to the coquis (frogs) and simply put your dishes in the basin under the sink and in the morning they will be cleaned and replaced. This is great since there are a few good dining options in the area but after about three nights you will have exhausted them and probably be happy for the availability of the grill.

Many would simply be content to stay here for the views, relaxing setting, and attentive pampering of Clem, but you just happen to be in one of the best locations for snorkeling on the whole island. Two miles from Ho'okena, a bay that is frequented by spinner dolphins, four miles from "Two-Step" and about 12 miles from Capt. Cook Monument, two of the best snorkel spots that the island offers. In about 40 minutes you can be at South Point the islands green sand beach, and in about the same amount of time in the other direction you are in Kailua-Kona in case you need a Costco or many more dining options.

Between the great snorkeling, beautiful flower gardens and fruit trees, the nearby native forest, the two wonderful "house puppies" along with Clem's hospitality you will find that you really do not want to leave. This place is a gem and should not be missed.

My partner Mike and I spent a week with Clem at Horizon Guest House, and its as simple as this "WE CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK"! We are always looking for unique, quiet, relaxing spots on the globe to get away from the daily stresses of life. This is one of our favorite places on the planet....in the middle of 40 acres of lush green, so quiet you can hear yourself breathing at night...among the other soothing noises of nature and not a car or city noise around. Clem is a gracious host, and an incredible cook, beautiful breakfast every morning, including fresh local fruit, most of it from the trees surrounding the guest house. Don't forget to ask him for the Mango Macadamia Nut Pancakes, and his custard soaked French Toast...two of my favorites...but it was all delicious! Its a small place and very gay friendly. Don't miss out on a wonderful experience, you can be a room number at a big resort, or you can be treated like a friend and human and called by your first name at Horizon Guest House. Its a magical place! Clem is knowledgable about the Big Island, and we had several great excursions from his reccomendations. ONE LAST THING, don't rent a car at the Airport Thrifty or Dollar Car Rental location....all the cars were old, beat-up, had high mileage, and were just filthy, my first and last time doing business with Thrifty, which is owned by the same group as Dollar Car Rental, and they share the same counter and cars with Thrifty at the Kona Airport.
