Superb views of the River Wye valley are available from Symonds Rock, the pathway to which runs from just outside The Royal Lodge and takes about 20 minutes to ascend. There is a roadway if you prefer to drive.
The Hotel is situated just a hundred yards from the river and another path leads to the scenic Biblins Suspension Bridge, built for campers and hikers in the area. It takes about 45 minutes to reach along the former bed of the railway that used to run into Symonds Yat and was closed by Dr Beeching in the 1960s. Mysteriously the railway entered a tunnel alongside the Hotel as it burrowed through the hillside but there are no obvious trace of this.... on public land anyway.
When walking to the bridge from Symonds Yat East it is possible to return via Symonds Yat West and catch the 'on demand' hand pulled ferry back to the east bank courtesy of the Saracens PH.
When the sun is shining this is a truly beautiful part of the country to enjoy. On such an afternoon give The Rose Tea Room a visit and enjoy your tea, cake or baguette on the open air terrace looking down on the river and ferry below.

The Hotel itself is well placed and has a beautiful vista. Our double room enjoyed an excellent view of the River Wye and was nicely furnished and welcoming. There were tea and coffee making facilities and a hair dryer in our room but not a safebox. The Hotel did have WiFi which was especially important as you should note mobile phone signals in this valley area are very poor.
Parking was no problem in front of the Hotel.
The food served was in my view a bit pretentious and did not deliver the quality it suggested but it was fine.
One night we were out late evening and struggled to find anywhere to eat but we had the good fortune to find The Misbah Indian Restaurant in nearby Monmouth, which served quality food till late and which I am happy to recommend to you.
Finally, do remember to check you have the Hotel front door key as well as your own room key on your key fob because we had the misfortune and stress to be locked out on our return from The Misbah at only 11.30.More
