Huge complex made up of six buildings, each with a pool and bar. I called a day or two ahead to confirm our reservation and the lady I spoke to asked if I had any special requests - king size bed, certain floor, certain building, ocean view ... we stayed in Building 3, 2nd floor, had an ocean view and king-size bed. It already had a foam mattress on it and was very comfortable. The room was simple, but just fine. I had read other reviews and knew to bring my own shampoo/conditioner and kleenexes. Soap was provided. Showers were great -- hot water and plenty of pressure! Our room was right behind the restaurant next door, so early morning deliveries usually woke us up. Keep the vent in the bathroom closed and the door to the bathroom closed, and it muted it enough to sleep fine.
We mostly ate at the Flamingo's main restaurant, and were very impressed that by Day 3 the waiters and waitresses knew where we liked to sit without us saying, and would have my husband's coffee (black) and none for me (I don't drink it) ready when we came back with our food. The 1st night the food wasn't very hot, but every night after that it was just fine. Each day had different themes (French, BBQ, Mexican) and I only wish we'd know a day in advance what the theme was the next night. The other buffet had seafood night, and we already had reservations at Piccolo's. I would have loved to have gone to the buffet instead. We ate at Piccolo's and at Jap-Jap. We weren't very impressed with Jap-Jap, and depends on what you had at Piccolo's. I had the Tour de Mediterranean (bleh), but my husband gushed about the Honey-Mustard Pork he had. We ate afternoon snacks at Rodizzio's several times, and would have liked to have tried that one as well for a meal. The main buffet had Mexican Coffee on Mexican night - highly recommend trying it!! The wine was non-descript, a little better at Jap-Jap.
The drinks at the bars were not very strong, but we weren't there to get drunk. Depended on what you ordered. Anything with tequila in it was not strong, but we both had a Bomba (rum drink) and that hit hard. So depends on what you're drinking.
The beach was nice and sandy and stretched for miles. There were warning flags out warning about stingrays and jelly fish. We saw a guy catch a stingray, so I was hesitant about going in the ocean, but it was lovely. I did end up getting stung by a jelly (it was overcast the whole time we were there), but it wasn't severe and hey, they had the flags up so it's my own fault. Avoid nighttime walks by the beach unless you have insect repellent. Vendors were always there, but most went away with a polite "no thank you." Sunsets were amazing.
We were impressed with the entertainment, both in the activities during the day, and the nightly show in the ampitheater. Another must-see at least once is the iguana feeding near Block 5. We walked to Bucerias one day, and felt safe doing so. It's all residential and condos along the way with a few shops and restaurants. Our friends went to a small restaurant called The Red Apple and highly recommended it for the huge shrimp. We were out of time, but if we ever go back ...!
It was a lovely stay, our first in Mexico and first all-inclusive, and a positive experience. Our friends had been to Cancun several times, and said that while the water is bluer and clearer, this felt more like Mexico and body image was less of an issue here. There were young couples with babies up to older folks with walkers, but most were middle-aged like us and we all felt very comfortable.
