Chennai (Madras) overview

Situated on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal - Chennai(Madras) is the capital and the largest city in the State of Tamil Nadu. Also known as the 'Gateway to South India', Chennai is an important port and industrial base. Chennai's culture reflects its diverse population and is known for its wealth of arts and literature. Chennai has a vibrant theatre scene and is an important centre for the Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form of Tamil Nadu. Chennai is also popular for the glitz and glamour of Kollywood, the 'Tamil film industry'. Popular festivals include - Pongal - in January and Tamil New Year's Day - in April.
