Learn how this fragile and unique ecosystem maintains a perfect balance of life and learn what you can do to protect such a special place. You will paddle your way for 30 minutes each way in a two person glass-bottom kayak, through the mystical mangrove channels leading to the Natural Reserve at Laguna Grande (please read complete description for weight and other restrictions). Once you arrive to the area of the lagoon where the bioluminescence can be best experienced, our guides will explain how this entire ecosystem works and will allow you to play with the water to see this effect (swimming not allowed). Cool bay poor tour group
Sep 2021 • Family
I brought my son to PR to primarily see a bioluminescent bay. I am glad that we were able to check this off a bucket list but I wish that our experience had been better. Most tours give an itinerary which would have helped me more mentally prepare for the evening. I left a message 4 days prior asking for info but the call was never returned. They called me the day before while we were in the air but did not answer my returned call all afternoon.
We were on the 6:15 tour and were picked up at 4:15. We had to change vans on the side of a busy road to meet with additional people. We had a fabulous conversation the entire evening so I did enjoy that part of the evening.
The shuttle was very rough and HOT. The ride there took about 1 1/2 hours. Many people were in street clothes and weren’t prepared to get wet.
Our guide was a jerk- chastising all of us, demanding, condescending, etc.
You have to wade into waist deep water to get into the kayaks and row 1 1/2 miles each way. The bugs were bad!!! I brought a dry bag with bug spray but the guide absolutely refused anyone to bring anything, including water, on the 2 hour trip. The water is stinky like sewer and it gets all over you. You will get eaten up by noseeums.
The glow was mild- less than we all expected and they had us all under a tarp to see them- I have to believe that is a drowning hazard.
I also got seaweed/ algae on my arms.
We had some older people on the tour who had trouble paddling back upstream and the guide was angry about that.
To get out of the kayak it is back into the water and an hour back in a hot van in sticky wet bathing suits. The mentioned changing into dry clothes but there is nowhere to wash off first.
The general view of our group was that it was a very unfavorable experience.
So, I am happy that we saw the bay but I believe the logistics could have been greatly improved upon. Dry bags should be allowed as some people want/ need “ something” in two hours.

Not worth the time or money
Aug 2021
I thought this was going to be something more then it was. I have no idea how to use a kayak. So me and my partner get in this thing and paddle around in the dark with all the mosquitoes. It might not have been that bad if there were not 50 people playing bumper boats with the kayaks from all the other tours.
it was a beautiful night though. the ski was gorgeous. once we got to the bay there were so many other people there with there lights on that you could barley see the bay anyway.
don't waste your time with this adventure. it is not worth the time and money.

Not that great.
May 2021 • Couples
This just isn’t that great of an experience. I don’t know if it’s better if you go on the second tour when it’s dark the whole time, but we ended up covered in a tarp to see the bioluminescence. It felt rushed because they had to get back for the second tour. I’m not that particular, but one of the guides was pretty rude and lost it a little when we didn’t understand his directions with how to pass the tarp back (pro tip: try explaining this to people on land vs. bringing it up when a bunch of inexperienced kayakers are moored together in the water). The mangrove forest was cool, and sunset in the natural preserve was neat. Having a glass bottom kayak seems like a marketing gimmick as there was nothing to see through the glass. It was generally below average with below average guides.

Massive letdown and overall a terrible experience.
This was a nightmare (by no fault of the guides). You are kayaking with people who have no idea what they are doing, that continually ram you and do not bother stopping. Once out to the bay it is barely visible. They tie up your entire group and cover you in wet heavy tarps to even be able to see anything, which is not much. We went on a day that was supposed to be good visibility with the moon phase etc. You are out there with your hand in the water looking at what could be bubbles for 10 minutes, then every single group (there are tons) all try to stuff back into a single file line to get back through the mangroves. If you are going to go, bring bug spray or long sleeves because you will get eaten alive. Overall, a terrible experience.

I made the reservation about 20 days prior to my reservation they called me the day prior of the tour saying they didn’t have enough kayaks. They offered different times but if course my others days I already had apps ended up just refunding the money but I miss out on going to the lagoon very dissatisfied....

It should be in bold letters when booking this excursion that you WILL NOT see colors in the water like the pictures displayed! This was a joke! Very dissatisfied and complete waste if money!

Dear Joyce, we are saddened to learn you did not enjoy this kayak adventure. Our tour description pictures do not show any moment a display of colors. They are very realistic and not enhanced (given a regular camera cannot capture this stream of light). If you did an online search, it is very unfair for you to rate us poorly with one star for something that is not related to our advertising. In addition, we have a disclaimer under Additional Information, on the Ticket Redemption details as well as on your Confirmation that reads: "The bio bay is an unpredictable natural phenomenon that may be influenced by multiple factors. Bioluminoscity level can vary from very visible to minimum or none without any previous notice. Full Moon phase may also affect the visibility. In the event of this happening alternate methods such as the use of a tarp will be incorporated in order to appreciate it." It's not fair to be held accountable if you or the person who made the reservation did not read the entire description or browsed our pictures. We have bee diligent to ensure all this information is available to our customers prior to booking.

Nighttime Adventure more like a nightmare
Feb 2021
Nighttime Adventure more like a nightmare. Our tour guide was impatient and rude with us inexperienced first time kayakers. There was no indication in the listing that this tour isn't beginner friendly, but it was far from friendly. The tour guide who's name I believe was John, yelled at my group and berated us for not keeping up with the other tourists. His behavior made the tour anxiety-inducing and uncomfortable. There was very little instruction and guidance throughout the tour and everyone is mildly confused. The bioluminescence is underwhelming. Splashing our hands around in a lake to see tiny microscopic organisms glow for a second was 100% not worth kayaking against the current in pitch black while trying to avoid trees as a stranger yells at you for 30 minutes. AND the water smells like literal sewage! It definitely wasn't worth $110 per person.
- Social distancing was enforced until they put all of the tourists (about 30 people) under one large tarp to block out the moonlight.
- Bathroom facilities have no toilet tissue (this is especially bad because it takes over an hour to get there from San Juan)
- I watched in horror as tour guides singled a woman out and made her step on a scale because they thought she looked close to the weight limit.
- Tour guides took photos of us but failed to clearly explain where or. how we are to receive our photos. (We were encouraged to leave our phones in the car)
- Two people from my group did not get to complete the tour because they couldn't keep up with the group. I contacted the company and got no response.

We are very sorry to learn the tour did not met your expectations and you felt this way. Quality of service is important to us. We have shared your feedback with the person in charge of the bio bay, to look into this and discuss it with the guides. We understand not everyone copes the same physical activities, this is why the description has clear information regarding safety requirements and limitations. Most of the participants we have on a daily basis are beginners. This is why first thing they do after signing the waivers is to provide a briefing on how to kayak and what to expect. If you go to the tab "Additional information" you will see we have published disclaimers that cover precisely some of the subjects you brought up (and additional ones). For example, and I quote: "Each participant must be capable of paddling on their own on a 2 person kayak, and be able to sit on the same position for about 2 hours." "Participants cannot be afraid of the dark as you will be kayaking thru pitch black areas." "Maximum weight is 185-190 lbs (86 kg). Due to the strict weight restriction all participants are subject to be weighted prior to beginning the tour. No cancellations or refunds will be issued if a person neglects to inform correct weight, and is not able to participate of the tour." "The bio bay is an unpredictable natural phenomenon that may be influenced by multiple factors. Bioluminoscity level can vary from very visible to minimum or none without any previous notice. Full Moon phase may also affect the visibility. In the event of this happening alternate methods such as the use of a tarp will be incorporated in order to appreciate it." I am sorry if some of this information was overseen by your group, this is why future travelers PLEASE read the entire description before booking this or any other tour.

Friendly & gets the job done
The team was great but this is the 3rd best bio bay in PR. If this is the only one you can make it to then you’ll definitely get to experience the magic! However it’s very touristy and I preferred the others. Glass bottom kayaks are worth it.

OK, but not worth the 3 1/2 hour round trip bus ride
Mar 2020 • Friends
Long bus ride there. Glow from the organisms in the bay is tiny sparks of light and interesting to to see, but much less than what it is hyped up to be. Not worth 5-6 hours of your time in San Juan.
