First and definitely won’t be the last!!
We knew we were going to have a good time because we were going to eat. But having Joana as our tour guide made it a GREAT time. She was SO knowledgeable about the city and the culture. She spoke about all the things we ate and went in detail about the process and even the family history of the restaurants we ate in! We HIGHLY recommend the Taste of Pitillal and if you’re lucky to get Joana, then you’re in for a real treat! It was amazing to see the preservation of culture and it allowed us to experience and have the feel of a local. If you have time, take yourself away from your typical excursion activities and experience the people and tradition of Pitillal.

Great guides, great food, odd scheduling issue
Oct 2021
Guides: Joana and Bernardo were engaging, funny, and very informative on the food, the Pitillal neighborhood, and local Puerto Vallaran culture. They are real assets to any tour.

Food: I'm not willing to spill the exact dishes and locations, but I found their choices of stalls and restaurants to be excellent. I was pleased that not all the stops were tacos.

Pitillal neighborhood: refreshingly devoid of tourists with a comfortable ambiance: colorful and bustling.

One thing: There were two times available that day (10:30am and 11am). I booked an 11am tour through TripAdvisor/Viator, and I got a call on my cellphone at 10:35am while I was en route saying that I was *late*. When I got there, I was told that I was the only one booked for 11am and that we'd be "catching up" to the 10:30am group. While having some element of this is nice (ie. private tour for some stops), I couldn't help but feel a little rushed until we caught up with the 10:30 group. This feels like an issue with the Operator (Vallarta Food Tours) than my guides. Telling someone they're late (when they're not) is not a good start.

Bottom Line: If you're looking to sample foods off the beaten path with some great guides, this is a great tour. Just book the 10:30am

Great Cultural Insight
Oct 2021
Miel was fabulous. She was informative, charming, and fun. The tour was very tasty and it lasted MUCH longer that I expected. It was worth every penny and more. We we did the tour in mid October so we were pleased that it started early. Even so, it did get pretty hot by the end of the tour but we expected that in October and it only got that hot because she took us to so MANY places.

I have been to Mexico many times but learned a great deal and now appreciate the culture and food EVEN MORE. Thanks, Miel!!

Mexican food where the Mexicans eat and live
Oct 2021
Our tour guide told us we would be easy to find at the Pitillal meeting point because we would be the only tourists in the square. True!

Miel was our tour guide and she lives in, and loves, Pitillal, and it shows. She not only knows the places, she knows the people in the restaurants and at the carts. One of our stops was a restaurant that makes tamales. They close during the day to make them, starting with fresh corn, then they open at night to diners, but we got the private tour and very good tamales too.

We ate tacos, many many breakfast tacos, and they are different from dinner tacos as it turns out. The fish taco was one of the best I have ever had. This tour was a great time walking and eating in real Mexico.

Solo Food Tour
The Taste of Pitillal food your was amazing! I always do food tours when I travel and this was nice as it was off the beaten path and where are the locals are working and residing. Bernardo was wonderful, I had my own private tour so had a great time enjoying the food and learning about the town. He also shared stories of his family growing up and their experience with food which made it much more personable, which I enjoyed. It was definitely a lot of food, very filling but I tried to eat every last bite - I failed lol. I would definitely recommend this tour. I drove and there is a parking garage under the plaza.

Delicious and charming! A must-do if you love local cuisine and culture
Jul 2021
Bernardo was an excellent guide! All the food we had was delicious. We learned a lot about the process of making the food, the local culture, and genuinely enjoyed getting to know Bernardo. It is hard to pick a favorite food, but the seafood tostada and the tamales are my top two. This was a great way to start our trip and gave us a more local feel which we definitely wanted.
