What to expect
Meet your guide and group of fellow nature-lovers on Wharf Street in Victoria.  Hop into your high-speed, inflatable Zodiac, a tough, agile vehicle perfect for up-close wildlife encounters. With your small group of 12 passengers, don the full-length cruiser suits, hats and gloves provided for your comfort.  Head out into the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, where the Salish Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. Although a bit early in the season, keep an eye out for the unmistakable tall, black fins of the local orcas.  As you take in the surrounding scenery, listen to commentary from your naturalist guide. Learn about the area's ecosystem, history, flora and fauna. Listen for the characteristic cacophony of the 500-lb (225-kilo) California Sea Lions, lounging on the rocks after a tough day chasing their meals. Watch the Dall's porpoises race your boat, zig-zagging off the prow of the boat. Take photos of curious seals with glossy coats and twitching whiskers. Enter quiet coves to watch great blue herons stalking their prey in shallow waters. Watch bald eagles resting on rocky outcroppings. Pass lighthouses, lonely archipelagos and see the famous rugged landscape of the Pacific Northwest coastline.  Your tour ends back at your departure point after 3 hours. This tour is seasonal and only operates from October through to April.

The best whale watching tour
We booked 2 hours before and having a doubt that will we see any whale in this season. Turn out, we see a group of whale popping up and show their tails. The best is when a humpback whale hit the water with its tail at least 5 times and have a little flip over to show its skills. What a views.
The tour brought us to many other wildlife too.
The best.

Humpback delight
Oct 2019 • Friends
A sunny October day. We were not too sure to do a trip that late in the year. However, turned out to be one of the best sightings we've ever seen. We saw a lot of different wildlife. The most stunning thing was a humpback whale playing qith its little one flopping and splashing around in a group of at least 8 whales. What a display.
Our skipper Ian was very knowledgeable. Funny guy. Best way to finish our year.

Dear BLM666, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we really appreciate it. It sounds like you had an amazing trip! Humpback Whales are fantastic to watch, they can be very playful and it's wonderful that you got to experience that on your trip. I will pass your kind comments onto Captain Ian, he will be delighted! Come back any time :) Gabriella

Very Very Disappointing
Sep 2019 • Friends
We booked to go whale watching with Springtide on the Vodiac for a bit of excitement. If we didn’t see whales we would still have had some fun , as it is advertised as “A thrill seekers must do”

The rest of our group went on the normal boat.

On arrival we were briefed by Joanne. She explained we needed to have no problems with our Knees, backs etc as the Zodiac ride was fast, wet and bumpy. We then had to sign a disclaimer.

She said our captain Ben was very experienced and would provide lots of information as we went along. Joanne took us to Ben and we got kitted out. I thought yes let’s go.

What a disappointment!! No whales and No Thrills or Excitement

Ben took us out but avoided the other Springtide Zodiac/boat, he stopped every so often to float around and explain about the marine life etc. However no one could hear a word he said. (He needs a head mic.)

Ben asked us to let him know if we saw anything.
When we spotted whales in the distance we let him know but he didn’t follow the others (Zodiac/boats ) but went in the other direction. I thought Ben is the expert he is going around another way to get closer, but unfortunately I was wrong.

When the humpback was spotted about a quarter mile away all the other boats were in situ. I thought now we were going to follow and join them, we would finally get to see something. But no Ben turned the Zodiac and headed back to shore well before time and any other boat or other Zodiac.

When we met the rest of our group who were on the other crafts they showed us all the photos that were taken of the Humpback and Euchre Whales. Which we should have seen too .

What a waste of money, Certainly NO Thrills and No whales.
The Zodiac ride was so sedate and Let me just say I am 70 and my husband is 79 years old

Dear Ravenhouse, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we do appreciate it and value feedback from our customers and I am sorry to hear how disappointed you were with your Zodiac experience. Before a trip’s departure, the skipper will have a detailed discussion with SpringTide’s fleet Captain and will they decide on the most efficient route to search for Whales. Often, this means our vessels split up and do not travel together to ensure we cover as much ground as possible during the search. Your skipper would have made his decisions with the safety and comfort of all his passengers in mind. I have sent you a private message in regards to your experience as I would love the chance to talk with you more about your trip. Please do feel free to get in contact with us at sales@springtidecharters.com Many Thanks, Gabriella Operations Supervisor

Amazing day on the water!!
Jan 2019 • Family
Wow, what a magical day we had despite it being out of season!! The lovely Fiona got the kids and my husband and I all kitted out with our wet weather gear and introduced us to Captain Mark. Then we were off on our adventure with the hope of spotting some Orcas. Despite not having this privilege we did get to see humpback whales up close and personal, a pod of Dall's Porpoises enjoying riding in the wake of our zodiac, harbor seals, california sea lions, steller sea lions and even a couple of gigantic elephant seals and just to finish off a perfect day we saw an abundance of the majestic bald eagles. Mark went out of his way to make sure we didn't return to shore "empty handed". After our trip we were then treated to hot chocolate and a lovely debrief before saying our farewells. Thanks Fiona, Mark and Springtide for giving us such a memorable day.

Hello jduel, Thank you so much for your kind words. Mark and I really appreciate the lovely comments. By the sounds of it your trip was pretty spectacular. Even Mark commented on how great the sightings were - especially the Dall's Porpoise and the huge amount of Bald Eagles. Thank you so much for reviewing SpringTide and for recommending us to future visitors. Have a safe trip home to Brisbane. Kind Regards, Fiona Fogarty Sales & Operations Manager

Killer Whale watching Springtide Victoria
Nov 2018 • Solo
Very informative, enjoyable and comprehensive whale watching trip out with a great guide who knew all there was to know. Zodiac was great to zoom around in and the co-operative tracking with other boats really helped us find tons of whales. Interesting to see a research zodiac spinning around with us. Fantastic trip and will go again next time I am there. This was not my first whale watching trip but it was the best. Damien Australia.

Dear BobBowowski, Thank you so much for your 5 star Trip Advisor review. We are so happy to hear that although not your first, we were the Best Whale Watching trip you've ever been on. Captain Ian, and the rest of the SpringTide staff work very hard to make the whole tour experience a great one from start to finish. Although we can't control the wildlife, we are in such a great spot in the world for watching marine mammals, that more times then not we see an abundance of wildlife on our tours! It is truly our passion to share with our guests the beauty and wonder of this wild west coast. Thank you so much for joining us and for recommending us to others. The best eco tour ever!!
How much more memorable can a wedding anniversary date be??
It was mesmerizing, truly blessing to be able to see the orcas after 30-45min of boat ride from the deck in Victoria Harbor.
Such a beautiful creature!!
I didn’t know how to verbalize my emotion that when I hear my voice(in the movie My hubby shot) it is almost embarrassing.
We flew out from Calgary early morning on that day to join this tour then went home on the same day as I needed to work the next day and it was well worth it!!
It is different when we visit their habitat and see the day to day activity comparing to see them in the big life-less tank isolated from their pod.
It is so humbling to visit them in their habitat hunting and training the young orca to hunt. They celebrated after successful hunting by breaching right in front of us.
We also saw a super cute sea otter floating in the midst of kelp, sea lions, seals , 2 elephant seals which looked like huge rocks until captain Ian told us they were elephant seals. BTW the elephant seals can only be spotted around this time of the year according to Ian.
The captain Ian was so knowledgeable but most importantly passionate about wild life as much as we were !!
He briefed us at the office, at the dock and on the boat about safety and operation.
The facility was good.
Office was very easy to find .
Plenty of parking space around.
And yes, zodiac boat was bumpy and splashy and cold for winter but you can get so much closer to marine life than a bigger boat and for me that’s the whole point of whale tour. So I would totally recommend zodiac boat.
After the tour they gave us hot chocolate to warm up.
If I can go again I will choose them in a heartbeat.
Thank you so much Ian and Meghan.
It made wonderful and memorable anniversary gift for us!

Dear Shizuka L, Thank you so much for your detailed review of SpringTide Whale Watching. We really appreciate the positive feedback. Happy Anniversary to you both. It is so lovely to hear that we helped make your special day such a wonderful memory. Watching Whales in the wild is a privilege and we do not take that for granted. We love educating our guests all about the wonders of this coast and the wild animals that live here. The more we can help educate the public on the importance of wild whales the better off they will be. You are so right. These animals need to be in their natural habitat and not, as you said, " in a big life-less tank isolated from their pod." You mentioned you flew from Calgary for the day, how exciting. Hopefully some day, possibly in the summertime, you will take another tour with us. Maybe next time you can join Captain Ian aboard Marauder IV, our 61ft covered vessel. You have experienced the fantastic Zodiac ride so why not come back and try our covered boat next time :) Thank you so much for joining us and for sharing your experience online. Sincerely, Fiona Fogarty Sales & Operations Manager

Great staff and skipper
Nov 2018 • Family
The office staff was extremely helpful and patient with us when the weather deteriorated. Our skipper was Ian who was knowledgeable and skilled when it came to finding wildlife. We saw a humpback whale, sea lions, seals, elephant seals, and an otter. The highlight of the excursion was watching a pod of killer whales hunt a sea lion and watching them celebrate by breaching.

The smaller boats leave you colder but much more maneuverable.

Hello PurduePolo, Thank you so much for your awesome review and the lovely comments about our Captain and office crew. We all try very hard to make your experience one to remember from start to finish! It sounds like you had a trip of a lifetime with Killer Whales, Humpback Whales, Seals, Sea Lions and more.... Whale Watching at this time of year is spectacular. There are less boats on the water making for a more personal experience, which is nice for everyone. It can get chilly though so we highly recommend you bundle up warm for the trip and then we offer two extra layers once you check in (rain jacket & pants and a full length cruiser suit which acts as your life jacket). Thank you for joining us and for sharing your experience of SpringTide on TripAdvisor. We are so glad you enjoyed the tour. Sincerely, Fiona Fogarty Sales & Operations Manager

Zodiac whale watching tour
Aug 2018 • Family
We did this same trip 20 years ago and back with our two teenage boys. Mark was our driver on the morning zodiac tour, which was an exhilarating rollercoaster ride through the mist and waves. We were out on the ocean for over 3 hours and spotted 4 orcas along with 4 other boats as they radio one another. One of the whales was a male with huge dorsal fin and you could see another quite clearly as it dived showing its tail fluke. Very exciting and Mark was able to answer questions about the whales and environmental changes and generally seemed to be a informed and knowledgeable guy. Thanks for great experience! Also special thanks to office staff who were extremely friendly and entertains.

Hello debbieingledew, Thank you for the review. I love that you joined us twenty years ago and again this year. It seems you had an awesome time each time, that is so cool! SpringTide has been operating for over 25 years now and has a fleet of five boats including SpringTide I, our 46' fishing boat. Next time you're in town maybe try one of our excellent fishing trips or even a Whale Watching tour on our larger covered boat, the Marauder IV. Either way, we would love to have you join us for a third time. Be sure to let us know you are a repeat customer and make sure you ask for me ;) Sincerely, Fiona Fogarty Sales & Operations Manager

Book this tour!!!
Aug 2018 • Family
This is a top-notch group. Everything was spectacular. The meeting place is central in a building on the wharf. The people greeting us were professional, comforting, & loads of fun. The "life suits" were clean. Mark, our naturalist guide was fantastic- personable & knowledgeable. We saw bald eagles, humpback whales, California Sea Lions, a local Sea Lion, and even a small black bear foraging on the coast. We were out on the water about 3 hours- time flew by. The Zodiak ride alone was a blast. Book this tour- you will be happy you did.

Wow mtg569, It sounds like you had an absolute blast out there and you were lucky enough to see a huge array of wildlife! Mark is a fantastic guide, we are so lucky to have him and our office crew are full of energy and excited to meet you all at check in. Although it is quite unusual to see a bear on our tours, you just never know what wild animals will appear. That is the beauty of the west coast of BC. Thank you so much for joining us and for writing such a detailed review. I know future visitors will really appreciate the information. Sincerely, Fiona Fogarty Sales & Operations Manager

Amazing experience!
Jul 2018 • Couples
Our guide Mark wanted to stay out longer and we were all for that because it was the best day of my life. I have taken 4 separate whale watching trips and never had the opportunity to see one. Today we saw 2 pods of Orcas and humpbacks. I recommend the zodiac you feel so close to them. Mark was so knowledgeable about all of the marine life and so were our other passengers so it was a great learning experience. We had perfect weather I recommend July. They bundle you up in suits and you definitely stay warm, but perfect weather conditions didn’t hurt. Icing on the cake we also got close to bald eagles, seals, and otters. Best gift my husband ever surprised me with.
