What to expect
As the evening sun begins to set, your tour of Edinburgh’s spirited sites and horrific history begins.  Meet your guide – Edinburgh’s infamous (and dead!) 19th-century cemetery director, Mr Clapperton – on the Royal Mile and brace yourself for a fiendishly funny walk through the dimly-lit cobbled streets and courtyards of old town Edinburgh.   As you admire the nocturnal nature of the capital city, listen to Mr Clapperton’s spooky tales of witchcraft, torture, plague and invasions. You will meet some colourful characters from the city’s past in the form of ‘jumper-ooters’ such as the Mad Monk of the Cowgate, a monk badly burned in a 17th century monastery fire, and Agnes Fynnie, a witch burned at the stake in 1641. You will also learn about invasions to Edinburgh coutsey of Rhuari McLeod, a wild and bloody Highlander, and Jimmy Tamson, a young man known for burying lots of dead bodies during the 17th-century Black Plague. As well as meeting a lively array of ghoulish characters from Edinburgh’s past, you will once again witness public demonstrations of spine-tingling torture devices that ‘enjoyed’ centuries of common use.  A few ‘volunteers’ will be required!  By the end of this light-hearted 80 minutes, you’ll look at Edinburgh’s darker history in a very different way! To remember your experience, you will take home a complementary copy of the fascinating ‘Witchery Tales’ book by Adam Lyal (deceased).

Wonderfully Gruesome Evening in Edinburgh
Dec 2020
I had an amazing night with the famous deceased Alex Clapperton as our guide, telling us all the gruesome facts and tales of Edinburgh Old Town. Despite we had a small tour (only 3 people), Mr Clapperton still did a great job to keep everyone entertained. I will certainly join their other tour the next time and recommend this tour to every single one of my friends when they visit Edinburgh.

Due to the pandemic, Edinburgh is so quiet in the evenings nowadays, making this tour even spookier, and I recommend everyone to support local small business like them, they are the backbone of our society. Another round of claps for Mr Clapperton!

Perfect Edinburgh evening!
Dec 2020 • Couples
What a brilliant way to spend an evening in Edinburgh! We laughed and gasped our way through the tour and learned so much about the city’s darker history. And we even got a book of gruesome and spooky tales to take home with us! Cannot recommend this fantastic tour enough.

Fun, interactive and educational. The tour guides clearly love their jobs. We went as a couple however it would be great for children too.

thanks for bringing the darker side of Edinburgh to life

Great fun and full of interesting facts + gore. A real life horrible histories experience. Alex Clapperman (deceased) skillfully knitted together amusing anecdotes with well researched historical details. A fantastic way to get to see Edinburgh off the beaten track. Thoroughly recommended

Witchcraft and gruesome silliness!
Sep 2020 • Couples
Really recommended tour by these guys. You'll die laughing as they tell you all about the blood soaked history of old Edinburgh. You might even find yourself cuffed, ready for the scaffold if you're not careful.
This tour was really good fun and well worth the money. They didn't mind just taking us around as a pair as we, quite bizarrely, were the only ones taking the tour that night. This must be one of Edinburgh's best kept secrets!

Amazing Tour by Mr. Clapperman
Oct 2020 • Friends
This was an absolutely incredible tour delivered by Alex Clapperman (deceased) and his colleague. There were 6 of us in total and the rest of the tour were eager to participate, which made it so much better. The tour guide was evidently very knowledge and knew what he was talking about, intertwined with lots of humour. It definitely helped made our experience in Edinburgh (I even got to walk around for a little while in a torture device).

Informative and Fun
Oct 2020 • Solo
This tour was not only very informative, but a lot of fun, too. The guides have a great sense of humour. I was hoping for a bit more Witchery, but overall this is an excellent way to spend 90 minutes in Edinburgh’s mysterious old town.
I also loved the Cadies & Witchery Tours shop. Well worth a visit.
