Overview

Edinburgh’s UNESCO-listed New Town is replete with innovative monuments and history: as the birthplace of seminal inventions such as the telephone and anesthesia, the New Town’s prosperous past begs to be discovered. This 2.5-hour walking tour, ideal for history enthusiasts, takes you to top attractions such as Princes Street, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and the Ross Fountain. Guide commentary reveals tales of secret Edinburgh societies, inventions of the Enlightenment period, and Edinburgh’s campaign to abolish slavery. Small-group tour limited to 10 people.

What to Expect

In front of Starbucks Coffee on the High Street, greet your guide and embark on your 2.5-hour tour of Scotland’s New Town. First, take a moment to absorb your surroundings: Scott’s Monument, in its Gothic glory, rises from Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh Castle gazes solemnly from its hilltop perch.

First, you’ll stroll to the world’s oldest Masonic lodge while listening to tales of secret societies established in Edinburgh. Hear, too, about the campaign to abolish slavery in Edinburgh and seminal inventions created by Scots such as John Knoxx and Alexander Graham Bell.

Admire the grand architecture of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, home to portraits of Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott, and enjoy the botanical beauty of the Princes Street Gardens. Conclude your tour with a visit to the Ross Fountain, where you’ll bid your guide farewell.

Enjoyable Experience

We had Aussie Dave as our tour guide for walking tour. He is very quirky and I enjoyed the passion he put into the history of Edinburgh. Also told us some good tips on what else to see that was not on the tour.
