Overview
The 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour was founded in 1996 by Lorcan Collins, author, historian and Dubliner. This two hour walking tour meets daily at The International Bar where participants receive a copy of the 1916 Proclamation and some explanatory literature. After a brief introduction to the build up to the Easter Rising of 1916 the tour then visits the sites of the revolutionary period including the GPO, City Hall and Dublin Castle. The tour also covers the War of Independence when Michael Collins battled for Irish freedom from 1919-21 and also includes a discussion on the Irish Civil War, 1922-23. The tour is highly educational but also great fun and very interactive. Prior knowledge of events is not required.
Highlights
  • Maximize time spent in Dublin with this interactive walking tour
  • Learn the history of Ireland’s rebellion from a local guide
  • See top landmarks including Dublin Castle and the General Post Office
  • Skip the hassle of self-navigating and follow your guide
What to Expect
Meet your guide at the International Bar in Dublin where the tour begins with an intro to Ireland’s revolutionary period, from the Irish Famine of the 1840s to the 1916 Rising. The first walking tour stop is Trinity College, followed by Old Parliament, and Rosie Hackett Bridge where you learn about the women of the revolution, from Countess Markievicz to Rosie Hackett. The tour continues to Daniel O’Connell’s memorial and Jim Larkin’s statue. See the bullet and shrapnel holes marking the exterior of the General Post Office on O’Connell Street. Also on the tour are Michael Collins’ offices, the Henry Grattan Bridge, and City Hall. The final stop is a visit to Dublin Castle, the seat of the British Administration before 1922. The tour finishes at Dublin Castle, but you can return to International Bar for a drink or lunch (own expense).

Three of us took this tour on Friday 21st Feb. Despite the weather we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Lorcan was a very knowledgeable guide and was humorous as well. We would definitely recommend this tour especially for those interested in this period of Irish history.

Lorcan is well versed on the history of Ireland and the 1916 uprising, I learnt loads and enjoyed his humour immensely, we went slightly over time and no one cared as we were so engrossed in the storytelling and history. Would highly recommend this tour.

Booked this walking tour on the back of my wife's Boss recommendation and even though storm Dennis was doing its best we thoroughly enjoyed Lorcan's wealth of knowledge about Irish history, he was so entertaining and informative, this is a must do tour when in Dublin.
