This is the 4th time I’ve visited Munich and taken many walking tours and I will say this is by far the most interesting, fun, and informative. Taff knows so much about the city and it’s development from it’s beginnings to present day. He is funny and interesting. His tours are easy to walk and have a few stops for refreshments but don’t be fooled these are not just random stops as there is a history lesson in virtually every place he goes.

I am fairly knowledgeable about the “dark” transitional period that happened in Germany after WW1 which led to the formation of the Nazi party, however I learned so much more than I ever imagined. I loved that we would go to historical places and hear the stories of how history was shaped while thousands of other tourists strolled by oblivious to the history of this building or place bc now it houses a Hugo Boss store. I enjoyed being taken to places off the beaten path and taught how this unassuming street or building had this huge impact on how our world was shaped. What I really appreciated was how Taff explained everything so well that it was both informative to me and my girlfriend who had very little knowledge of anything we experienced on the tour. The content was explained in an entertaining way and easily digestible for both the well versed and novice learner. Most importantly for us though was that it FUN! I mean we were on vacation and that’s the goal..right?

I’ll close by saying if you don’t take this tour you are doing yourself a disservice. I’ve taken tours all through Europe on all kinds of subject matter. Some are great and some are Meh. I got lucky here as From what I understand Taff’s company is small and independent and doesn’t have some huge advertising budget to attract visitors. I can say stumbling upon this tour was very lucky for us and we had a really fun time, appreciated Taff’s humor and teaching approach (I mean the guy has props! Who doesn’t love props in the lesson!) and we learned a whole bunch about Munich you probably wouldn’t find elsewhere.

I was really glad to welcome you back for a fourth tour of Munich. I try hard to give my repeat guests something new; and to date I think we have done that - testimony to just how much history there is in Munich. I'm glad that the both of enjoyed the history, the anecdotes and the stops for refreshments (So important on a hot day!). Further, I'm really pleased that my "pitch" worked for the both of you. Thank you so much for your review: they mean a lot us here at Dark History Tours. As you say we are a small independent company - we don't have a huge budget for advertising - but we do pay our guides well for their efforts, guides who are always reading and researching so that they are always bringing their A-Game to a tour. Thanks again, Dai "Taff" Simon, Dark History Tours

While it’s possible to get this type of tour with a large group for a lower price, we found this private tour to be perfect given our interest in Nazi and WWII history. Joanne was simply amazing. She delivered great expertise and insight as we walked through Munich and discussed many of the iconic events that framed such an important part of world history. Since these type of places and events are understandingly unlabeled and unmarked, having someone like Joanne point them out is a must to truly understand the things that happened and why. Joanne also appropriately used her awesome English humor along the way, an added bonus! If you are an avid WWII history buff or you just want to learn more about that era in a fun and private way, give these folks a try and ask specifically for Joanne. You won’t be disappointed!

We have learned that sometimes we miss out on information when do self guided or audio tours. You’ll probably never go to these places again. So make it worth it!!
Taff corresponded with us for a few months before our arrival and tailored the trip to our needs.
Once we got to Munich, he met us at our hotel. He had pictures and actual objects to enhance our experience.
We walked around town and then trained to Dachau. His knowledge and passion impressed!
You won’t regret it.

Everyone in my group had nothing but good things to say. When your in a city as old as Munich, you owe it to yourself to take this tour. The tour was interactive and included beer. Taff was a fantastic guide. He was knowledgeable, incredibly engaging and flexible with tour logistics. He even joined us at Oktoberfest after the tour. A year later, and we still talk about the tour. We took the tour in September but trip advisor won't let me set it back that far.

After writing this I see it has gotten long. For the short story, we highly recommend Taff for private tours in & around Munich! He is a WWII expert and degreed archaeologist, as well as a darned nice guy!

We booked Taff for 4 days of private tours including Dachau as well as in & around Munich, all focused on WWII. Of course you can just do the audio tour at Dachau without a guide, but in our travels all around the world we have learned time & time again that having a guide yields a much more enriching experience. Taff is super knowledgeable and respectful of this very difficult piece of history.

Taff has all kinds of WWII paraphernalia he brings with him on the tour, so you get to see, hear, & touch history.

Infinitely knowledgeable and simultaneously humble, Taff is the best guide we could imagine for this subject. He is from the UK. We contemplated whether we should get a German guide. Being totally transparent here, and this is just my opinion, I honestly think it would be extremely difficult for a German person to be able to present such depth and breadth of information. It’s simply too embarrassing and shameful. Again in spirit of transparency, no German young enough to be out giving walking tours should be held responsible for what happened in Germany in the years preceding and during WWII! But I can see where it could be difficult to present the information in an objective, unambiguous manner. That’s why we purposely chose Taff—and we were not disappointed!

Taff is the best choice of guides if you want to tailor your trip to your specific interests instead of a cookie-cutter tour where every tour is the same. Prior to our trip & on each of the 1st days, Taff took effort to understand our interests and adjusted plans to deliver an amazingly informative and enjoyable history of the Munich area in & around WWII.

If we were to do it all over again we would still book with Taff!

My 3 teenaged sons and myself went on a private walking tour with Taff to learn about the Third Reich and WW2 and the connection to Munich. My boys loved it. They already know quite a bit about the Nazi regime and WW2 so Taff intrigued them with more details of historical significance. He is very knowledgeable and enhanced the discussion by sharing artifacts and photos along the way. It was a very interesting and worthwhile tour. Taff is also very easy to communicate with and was very flexible with the timing of our tour. Thanks Taff for a great afternoon!

My mom and I recently visited Germany and Poland to "bear witness" to the victims of the Holocaust after I took a Holocaust course two years ago as part of my 10th grade year. I felt that it was important to see the places where these tragedies took place so that we do not forget and repeat history. Doing the Rise of Evil Tour with Joann was the perfect way to start off our trip! She was our first tour guide we had on our trip, and we absolutely adored her. She was British, which was very nice because we felt that we were truly getting an honest retelling of the history without any bias.

Joann took us all around Munich from 9:15 am to 1:45 pm, and we saw many sites that we never would have known were significant without a guide (i.e. a store that now sells Apple products is where Hitler first gave a speech that impressed a member of the Nazi party, who recruited him to be their leader). It felt surreal to be standing in the very places where so many historical events had taken place, and Joann made it feel even more authentic by showing us photographs and artifacts from the time period.

We really enjoyed our time with Joann and learned SO much from her (so much that I immediately went through our photos and captioned them all so I wouldn't forget anything I'd learned). It was the perfect way to start our trip--in Munich learning about how all the evil began before ending our trip in Krakow at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Incredibly chilling but necessary history to learn. I've already recommended Dark History Tours to a friend!

Taff could have been Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man in the World. He is an archaeologist, an actor, a World War II and Medieval history buff, an ex-pat but, also the local, a beer aficionado, and your pal from the pub. Somehow he also showed up to our tour with a baseball hat of our local football team. (Hook 'em!). A man of surprises.

Our party of 3 was in Germany for some hiking, followed by a visit to Oktoberfest. We also wanted to be more knowledgeable about World War II and Germany's politics. We contacted Taff for a private WWII walking tour by email and he was very responsive and helpful. His website was also helpful with thorough descriptions of the available tours. Payment was due at the time of the tour.

Taff emailed to confirm our meeting 2 days prior to our tour. He met us at our centrally located hotel at 9:45AM and then the amazing story telling started. Taff used many visual aids to set the scene and, intentionally, or unintentionally, this had the secondary effect of creating a sense of conspiracy/ secrecy. The tour had many unexpected moments. We did quite a bit of walking ( my phone noted 5.5 miles) but, there were also frequent breaks to appreciate beer gardens and grab food.

Overall, we felt like we had spent the day seeing and absorbing the feel of the city, as well as learning about the rise of the 3rd Reich. Taff also gave us tips for our Oktoberfest visit that were immensely helpful. Given the richness of his storytelling and the time he spent with us this was an extremely well priced tour. Highly recommend this tour guide. Also recommend this tour prior to touring Dachau.

Taff guided my husband and I on an excellent walking tour. Taff is one of the best tour guides that we have had anywhere. His passion in conveying the history and significance of the events that took place where you are walking is very powerful. If you have any interest in the events of World War 2 in Munich, this is a tour that you don't want to miss. Taff did an exceptional job with answering additional questions of other topics too if you have additional interests with regard to Munich. He is a walking encyclopedia. Taff made the tour very meaningful with his detailed descriptions of the events that took place, it was both informative and educational. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Germany. We highly recommend.
