What an amazing experience, I couldn’t recommend Buggy Pirates any higher. This is the first review I’ve left in 33 years, so that in itself says it all! Our guide was Eloy, super friendly and a great guide! Biggest shout out has to go to Speedy, the happiest man I’ve ever met, amazing energy throughout the trip and great photographer, I literally don’t have a bad word to say about his other than stop reading this review and get it booked! Thanks for an amazing day guys ❤️Written 14 September 2024
- Z7342ONjohnw0 contributionsA memory to last a lifetime...Top 10 experiences of my lifetime. Was picked up from my hotel reception at 9am and didn't get back until 5pm at night. A day that I'll remember forever. The Rykers are super easy to control and ride. Highlights... * Riding along the coastline by the turquoise sea with the sun in my face and the wind at my back. * Riding up the mountain track to a height of 1km, just above the clouds!! * A beautiful, traditional, Canarian lunch in a cave restaurant built into the mountains. * A lovey stroll arund the stunning town of Agüimes. Top tips... * Take plenty of sun cream and some water. You are exposed to the sun for the full day. It feels cool with the wind whilst you are riding but you are exposed to the sun for the full time. * There is a short 20 minute hike around the mountains and a 20 minute stroll through the town of Agüimes so be prepared to do a little bit of walking. * Wear comfortable underwear and shorts/trousers. The riding can become a little uncomfortable after a while. * Take lots of pictures!! A special mention to our guide, Dani. He was such a lovey young guy. Super knoledgeable about everything, very patient and relaxed attitude. He is an absolute credit to the business. Thank you, Dani, for a wonderful experience!! John from Scotland. 🏍😎Written 9 September 2024
- QueenBeEeeeeee0 contributionsBrilliant buggy tourHighly recommend. The tour is great. You drive though towns and up mountains to beautiful views of the valleys. You get to look into canyons. Then the last hour is driving through dusty off roads which are super fun and exhilarating. Speedy was hilarious and funny. The tour guide was so good he was multi lingual which was great for all the different nationalities. Definitely do this again if we visit gran canaria again.Written 9 September 2024

- Charly M0 contributionsAlright experience, wouldn’t do it again.First impressions were good, we were picked up from the hotel perfectly on time and taken to the base. It was a clean and well kept space where you can buy merch, bandanas and refreshments like water and ice cream. The staff hype up the group with chants and music, they spoke multiple languages and were very knowledgeable, explaining the trip and how to work the buggies in detail. It is definitely a bumpy ride, with many sharp turns and thin roads- which only adds to the fun. If you’re not a fan of heights, or cliff edges I would definitely avoid. If you both have driving licenses there is a couple of opportunities for you to swap who is driving. The first view point was lovely, the second was very disappointing. It was just a bit of flat land, no one bothered to take any photos or enjoy the second ‘view’. You are given a buggy number, have time to adjust and set off in a long line of buggy’s. The leader is in the front, with a member of staff in the middle and at the back to make sure everything runs smoothly. Me and my partner were pretty much in the middle of the group with a staff member following behind us. During the induction stage you are explicitly told to obey the road signs like a normal vehicle during the ON-road portion of the journey. This was no problem for me and my partner as we are both ‘safe’ drivers anyway. HOWEVER, during the ON-road section, the leader and buggy’s infront of us were going particularly fast (presumably the customers in the buggy’s trying to keep up with the leader). I would presume doing roughly 70/80 in a 40. Whilst driving, I was going 40 and when i would speed up to try and keep up with the group and those in front, the staff member behind would beep and flash us to tell us to slow down. This was frustrating, but we obeyed (trying to go a bit quicker where we could). It came to a head when the leader and those in front of us were going stupidly fast, and after being told off by the staff member behind us, meant we were quite far behind and lost them. There was no buggy in sight, and I had no idea where I was going, this was made worse by the fact I am from the UK, so do not drive on the same side of the road as Europe and do not properly understand the road signs. The staff member behind us did not speak enough English, or us, enough spanish, to properly communicate where I was to turn to get back to the base. It meant whilst he was shouting, we came to a screeching stop in the middle of the road to figure out where we should be going. Whilst much worse could’ve happened, it was extremely dangerous, and careless of the group leader which put a real downer on the experience for us and I would hate for any other paying customers to be put in this position.Written 7 August 2024

My wife and son and I went on this tour and it was great.
The Guide - Placido - was a really nice guy, and very helpful. He showed us some basics and then we were off on a great tour up to the highest place on Gran Canaria via the inside of the ancient volcano.
Driving the convertible beetle was really cool in the sun, and in convoy with 5 others.
We stopped off at a lot of interesting places with great photoshoot opportunities.
A simple lunch was included and a visit to an Aloe Vera farm where we had a demo but were under no pressure at all to buy anything, but if you do want some Aloe Vera products , there's a great range reasonably priced.
The cars are easy to drive , but a word of warning, at the start of the tour you have to go up a really steep drive, don't make my mistake and think you're in 1st gear, when you're actually in 3rd, and nearly burn the clutch out.

What an absolute bargain and fantastic tour and experience. Isabella was a fantastic host.
It is ideal for those who wish to see more of Garna Canaria and go to places you wouldn't normally go to or know to go to.
The VW bugs are great although if you are a tall family like we are be warmed the rear is a little tight and uoright.
They allow multiple drivers so my daughter managed to drive a section and pop her foreign driving cherry having I ky passed her driving test 2 months ago ..
The sights are simply stunning and Isabella is so I formative and friendly and can speak multiple languages to help everyone enjoy their experience.
The drive is 'spirited' on some of the most epic roads I have ever driven on. This is to fit in as much as possible into the time. So prepair to drive like a rally legend 😄 So if like me you love driving and enjoy challenging and winding mountain roads you'll be in for a treat..but may be a little daunting for some drivers of not used to driving on the right while making progress.
This is say was only negative. That I would have loved to stop and take more pictures of this beautiful place , but if you stop out of the convoy , you may loose them. However, Isabella always stopped or slowed down to allow any stragglers to catch up again .
Enjoy.. thoroughly recommended 👍👍👍👍

This tour was really great especially if you want to feel a little independent. The tour guide Placido was great at making my husband who was driving feel at ease and excellent and making sure everyone was staying with the tour. The cars were spotlessly clean, really comfortable - and you could play your own music etc. We went to the highest peak on Gran Canaria and some other amazing natural sights.

When I read about this self-drive tour as a possible and quite unique excursion whilst visiting Gran Canaria, I was really keen to try it out. I’m glad to say it exceeded my expectations! The Buggy Pirates driver picked me up from my hotel at 8am on the dot. Around half an hour later we arrived at the Buggy Pirates base. There, Placido, the brilliant, multilingual (spoke Spanish, German and English fluently) guide, introduced himself and we set off shortly afterwards, after a safety briefing. Placido explained the significance of every place we stopped at, such as the Mirador Astronómico, the aloe vera farm, the Pico de las Nieves and the echo caves, really well. He also reminded me nicely to keep to the right more and to mainly stay in second gear when driving! I would highly recommend the Buggy Pirates’ VW Beetle Cabrio tour of Gran Canaria and, in particular, Placido as your guide.

Driving around in the convertible Beetle led by guide Isabella was the best excursion we did on the island. We drove around for more than 120km - stopped at a number of beautiful viewpoints - visited an aloe vera plantation and an original Gran Canaria house. It was nice not having to think about where to drive. Isabella speaks fluent English, German and Spanish. And therefore a great added value to go on tour with

We made our own way by taxi to the meeting point as didn’t want to be on a long pick up with lots of hotels. Turned out only one other family so three cars including the guide, Isabella, who was very friendly and informative.
After filling in forms we got on our way in the Beetles which were manual left hand drive. Very nice car with smooth gears. Easy following the guide who waited for us at points we were behind. Stopped in half a dozen places including highest point on Gran Canaria and aloevera farm. Smooth roads and very scenic views. No awful mountain drops as all roads had barriers along edge. A few hair pin bends but just take it slowly. Hardly any traffic. Lunch in a local restaurant which was nice. Take a hat and drive in trainers so you can also walk up the rocky paths.
Well worth the reasonable price which includes lunch and pick up/drop off

Brilliant tour. We were picked up from our hotel and taken to the the base where the Beetles are kept. We had a safety briefing. I had never driven a left hand drive car before so was slightly nervous. We set off on our journey to the highest part of Gran Canaria. On the way we stopped at an aloe Vera farm. We continued on our way up to the summit. The views were lovely. We stopped at the top to take in the view and take pictures. We took a different route back down and stopped for a sandwich and a drink at a lovely little place. We then headed off to some caves where we went to explore. After this we headed back to the base. Our guide Placido was a fantastic. I had no need to worry about the driving as it was fine. We connected our phone to the car so we’re driving around playing our favourite tunes. This is a brilliant tour that I highly recommended. If you go make sure you take plenty of water and sun cream. It was also very windy up the peak so I was glad I took a hoodie just in case lol. We were dropped back to our hotel afterwards. We were out about 7 hours in all. Best excursion yet. Thank you Buggy Pirates

We did the Big Mountain Tour because we were looking for an activity that would not bore the 7 year old child and give us many impressions of the island. It was absolutely worth it. Isabella was super nice, explained everything great, it was easy to drive after her. The tour took about 6.5 hours and cost 160€ - with pickup at the hotel and back there. The weather was of course great, from about 13:00h there we closed the top, it was just too hot - even in the convertible. Gran Canaria has incredible mountains of volcanic rock that are simply totally impressive from close up. We looked at the landscape, visited an aloe vera plantation, had a snack, visited the highest mountain on the island and visited a cave on the way back. All in all top and absolutely recommended.

We had a fabulous day with Jan and his amazing little Beetles. We were picked up at 8 am and transported to the car pick up point. We drove along some amazingly narrow roads up the mountain and the views were stunning. Jan made it very interesting by pointing out some plants - the produce of some are in everyday use in the house, and one highly poisonous. We saw cave dwellings, a beautiful church followed by a lovely lunch right at the top of the mountain we were climbing. Then we went to an Aloe Vera Farm. That was fascinating (and costly to us in the end - we couldn't resist buying some of the produce). It was truly a great day and worth every Euro. Thanks to Jan for making it such a memorable day of our holiday.
