Must do while in Algarve!
Jul 2021 • Couples
Probably the best way to experience the caves around Portimao, the ship looks like out of an movie the small boats get into all the caves, and the crew is very friendly and helpful. The captain also gave us plenty of information about our surroundings. We booked our tikets with Paula from Portimao she was also very helpful in assisting us making the right choice :)

Caves are impressive
Sep 2020
The boat was novel and it was an enjoyable trip. However the crew were not very friendly (perhaps channelling their inner pirates) and although there was cursory information provided in English, the focus was far more on providing information in German (the German commentary lasted far longer than the English). The trip round the caves in the small boats was interesting although the boats didn't feel very safe at times and we ended up soaked through. Was glad we saw the caves but probably wouldn't join the Santa Bernarda again.

Buyer BEWARE!!
We booked this tour right on the waterfront. Our first “clue” should have been that no other tours were being offered today.

Because of the size of the ship/boat - they were able to take folks out - BUT - we could only see the caves from the boat - as the sea was too rough for us to take the smaller boat into the actual caves. No fault of the staff (safety FIRST) but I believe we should have been told BEFORE we departed.

The Captain did offer us another sailing on Friday - but the weather forecast for Friday is even worse than today. (And it’s another afternoon lost on your vacation).

My advice - ASK - if you will be able to actually visit the caves if that is your desire. Otherwise - wait until the weather is better. With today’s technology- they should have easily been able to inform us before we actually paid.

Staff - including The Captain - were fluent in many languages. They also offered sea sickness pills, blankets & coats if you were cold.

So far it has been non existent
Nov 2019
Our tickets said that the ship sailed at 14:30 and that we should get there 1/2 hr early.
When we arrived we were told that the ship had left at 1:30.
We hope that the company will honour our tickets tomorrow. Otherwise we hope TripAdvisor will make sure we get a refund.
I will update this when i find out.

ahoy, me hearties! This will shiver your timbers!
Oct 2019
We boarded the caravelle in Portimao, a beautiful timber sail and engine powered ship. the crew were laid back but very friendly and took great care of everyone. The Santa bernarda Pirate ship sailed east along the stunning coastline and we had informative snippets of information in a number of languages along the way. We stopped about two hundred metres from the cliffs and in groups of ten boarded small boats wit outboard engines. Expert boatmen then took into cave after spectaular cave, some were pitch dark, some low ceilinged, some had giant openings in the roof with light streaming through. It was exciting and breathtaking from start to finish.
We sailed home at a leisurely pace and were sorry to be leaving the grad oul ship and her charming crew. Just 35 euros, four magical hours that passed too fast. parking was free, coffe two euros and they do a full day trip also with bar-b-cue included.
Well done all. It was our second trip (the last one twelve years ago) and we'll be back.

Memorable Exploration of the Caves of Faro - Lagoa
Aug 2019
This trip on Santa Bernarda would stand out for a long long time for its unique experience it offers.

Spent a good amount of time with the Captain and possibly owner Bernardo too to understand the genesis of this ship, tour and experience they offer to tourists.

Firstly this was a fishing trawler abandoned after its life, picked up by this team, refurbished, retrofitted all items - engine to communication etc., to obtain seaworthiness and with supporting safety and insurance licenses, its declared safe to do these trips and they are in business. Wonderful job they have done.

So one should understand that this is not wheel chair friendly or even the seat arrangements are just benches along the periphery and some places are provided with detachable padded foam seats. But the hosts are more than willing to help all enthusiastic tourists to help them on / off board and even help pushing the wheel chairs up / down the ramp.

So anyone wanting to go on this ship should be ready to put up with the rough and tough feeling of the ship , in other words, be ready to experience and enjoy the real sea voyage in a realistic environment.

The ship with its sails launched, and a pirate flag on its forward above Bow, one gets a different feeling in comparison to the normal /standard ship. Here with its extended forward with a net on, its indeed different and stands out.

Those who are prone to seasickness should not lean against the backrest and should sit forward and allow the ship to take on the waves and not transfer it to body.

Let's talk about the trip / exploration. The ship departs from Portimao and crosses lagoa, Faro and shows all the way the the limestone hillocks coastline. They reach Faro, anchor out there, and ferry through small boats batches of people to the caves of Lagoa and Faro and explain their features, scantily though viz., echoing caves, caves with opening on top, caves where water seeps through them in to the sea, a small beach like land inside the cave etc., Its an exhilarating experience to experience the nature's play and such wonders.

Surprisingly all through the coast, the sea isn't rough at all and of course low tides make you feel that you're on a calm sea.

At the anchor point, should anyone would like to take a plunge in to the Atlantic, they are ready with safety rings to help out and adventurist tourists can have a plunge.

Walking on the caves from land end and doing board walk and experiencing its history are way different from seeing them from ocean and going in to them and seeing / experiencing it there.

In short, its a great experience and worth including it as one item of the bucket list.

Good trip
Jun 2019 • Couples
The boat is amazing, very impressive to look at and is the genuine pirate ship! Myself and my partner chose this trip to experience sailing past the beautiful Portuguese coastline, we were very disappointed when they raised one sail but it was just for show, they continued using the engine. The trip could have been done in 2 hours but it took 4, there are only two smaller boats to bring all customers to visit the caves so when this is being done you must simply wait. We were seated at the bow of the boat so unfortunately could not hear or make out what the crew member was saying about the various places of interest...a good trip but not great I'm afraid

Great Caves but no Sailing
May 2019 • Friends
Caves are a must see in Portugal and the small power boats used by this tour allowed access to the smaller caves that other tours could not enter. This was the highlight but if you are expecting to sail you will be disappointed. The crew raised only one sail, they never untied it so it was just for show as they motored both ways to the caves.

Also the ticket we received from TripAdvisor said to be there at 1:30 for a 2:00 sail. We didn't sail until almost 3:00

Poor weather ruined our trip
Apr 2019 • Friends
In good weather this boat trip would be brilliant but on the day we had booked for, it was very windy with heavy rain showers. We couldn't cancel without losing our money so we turned up, expecting the staff to tell us if the conditions were good enough to go out. Everyone boarded, probably around 40 people, and we left Portimao. We were then told that the sea was really rough, much worse than expected for April and that we wouldn't be able to transfer into the small boats to go into the caves. We should have been told this before we left, maybe we could have been given the option to come back another day. For the whole trip, a lot of people were ill and it was not fun. The lady working on the boat was lovely, handed out sick bags, tablets blankets. I would definitely not recommend this trip if the sea is anything but very calm. The staff should be more honest, I would rather have lost my money than spend three hours being sick.
