Overview
Get close to nature in the way of old Icelanders on your 2 or 4-hour horseback riding experience from Reykjavik, dependent on transfer option. Hop on a small, sturdy, Icelandic horse, a breed originally brought here by the Vikings, and enjoy a relaxing ride through lava-laden scenery past mountains, lakes, and moors. Your 1.5- to 2-hour ride will be matched to your ability and led by an instructor. Hot drinks, riding equipment and round-trip hotel transfers included.
What to Expect
On arrival, meet your instructor to adivse of your ability level — beginner, intermediate, or experienced.

Get up-close to the Icelandic horses, learning about this gentle breed. Descendants of Viking horses brought here in the 10th century, these sturdy, good-nature steeds are known for their tölt, a four-beat gait that makes riding on rugged terrain smooth and comfortable.

Next, watch a short instructional video, don your provided riding gear, and hop into the saddle. Learn to ease your horse into the tölt, and set out behind your instructor. Soon afterwards, having watched you riding, your instructor will split you into three groups – beginners, intermediates and experienced.

Enjoy your 1.5- to 2-hour ride. Beginners ride slowly over easy terrain, with intermediate and experienced riders tackling more challenging routes at different paces. Just advise your instructor if you want to go slower or faster.

As you ride, soak in the beautiful scenery. Weave through lava fields and moorland, passing volcanic mountains and lakes.

After your trek, savor coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at the stables.

The horse knows the way!

My husband and I loved the experience of riding Icelandic horses even though we are not riders. We took the 1.5 hour Lava tour and it was great fun! They have a really helpful video on their website - they will play it for you...More

The views were great, the tour guides were lovely but the bus driver was horrible

I paid extra for pick up for 3 people for this tour. The bus driver was a total jerk who sped over speed bumps at least 30 mph, shooting myself and son and daughter out of our seats very hard. I have 2 herniated disc...More

Just ok

Facility, pick up/drop off, and staff were fabulous. The scenery is lovely, but we didn't feel like we were "getting out". Didn't see mountains, lakes and moors. The terrain is a large lava field (beautiful). Overall, we were hoping for a bit more. The Icelandic...More

Very Accommodating; Above and Beyond Service

The staff at Ishestar Stables went above and beyond my expectations!! I booked our horseback riding experience a couple months in advance, for my 8 year old daughter and myself. I chose to drive ourselves (instead of pick-up service), which turned out to be a...More

Horse riding

Great staff and horses. They have all the gear needed. Pleasant terrain. A lovely way to experience the Icelandic landscape with a nice hot chocolate to round it off.

Yes easily possible to do the Horse Riding with such a long stay over time. Reckon an hour to Reykjavik centre minimum from the airport. Horse riding is a couple of hours. I’d actually recommend a few hours at Blue Lagoon... More
