- 1This tour introduces you to personalities from the past and brings their moving and fascinating stories to life. You will also discover the mezzanine storey, where the personal servants of the princess once lived. Another of the many tour highlights is the 17th-century palace chapel. The organ in the chapel partly dates from the time of Joseph Haydn and was regularly played by him.
About the operator

- primelens0 contributionsFabulousThe highlights were the winery and the treasures carefully preserved through centuries of upheaval. The decor was very Andy Warhol on the way in which was horrific especially so close to the actual gold carriage of the Magister. I feel this banal attempt to modernise is unnecessary especially in a listed building. Overall it was a stunning privilege to visit and the QR codes in each room were a welcome addition.Written 7 January 2025
- Grabyrdy0 contributionsFor musicians, but not olnyVery interesting castle, especially for a musician due to the connection with Haydn. Lots of stuff about him, although I could have probably done without the odd wallpaper in the Haydn rooms. Pleasant staff.Written 10 August 2024
- Soccca0 contributionsNice palaceA nice Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt. But I must admit I expected some more. Some years ago I was in Esterhazy Palace in Fertod (Hungary) and it had impressed me more than this one in Eisenstadt.Written 16 August 2023
- Martin H0 contributionsA nice day out from ViennaThis is just over an hour from Vienna by bus or train ( expect to pay c 25 euros for a return trip by train - 2023 prices). Palace is c 15/ 20 minute walk from the station (slightly uphill) Lots of exhibitions and items of interest. I would strongly advise paying the extra and taking one of the guided tours, particularly if you are a Haydn fan, as you get into areas, that are less open and that are very Haydn related.Written 14 August 2023

- db13490 contributionsTruly awful, tacky and tastelessI had wanted to visit for about 40 years. The attraction was Haydn. What a disappointment. Everything was awful. The booking on line did not work properly and although I got a ticket for the next day at 10pm, the ticket I had received was for the day I had booked. No guided tour available. The train journey was surprising. A very flat landscape and uninspiring. The walk up through Eisenstadt was sobering. Very run down and a bit edgy. The Schloss was badly organised and the Haydn 'explosion' was completely awful in every way. The objects were badly displayed, had little authenticity and set within atrocious decor. If you are interested in Haydn and his music please do not go. The Schloss exhibition was a random collection of items from the family. It made no sense, was badly organised and I could not wait to leave. The redeeming features: None, although the lady in the shop who sorted out the ticket was helpful.Written 29 October 2022
- Bianca R0 contributionsGreat experienceIt's a beautiful destination for an afternoon, a walk in the park and other activities. It's a museum where children as well as adults can discover many interesting things and do not get bored.Written 12 December 2021
- Csapob0 contributionsAn eye-openerTeenager always know everything. It is very hard to tell them something new... They will have to draw their own conclusions. For me, it was great! I always knew that the Esterházys were very open and progressive, but when you see how much they cared for their staff you get another feeling. Many things they did back then would be welcome even today. Extraordinary! Having the financial means is the prerequisite, but when you know how things were managed elsewhere, you can not have but awe! The guide was excellent, thank you! I can only recommend this place for everyone with an eye for culture and history.Written 19 July 2020
- chrisrferdi0 contributionsEisenstadt HighlightAs a daytrip from Vienna , I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Eisenstadt to see the Esterhazy Palace. Full of history, this wonderfully maintained Palace was visually stunning and having a guided tour gave us a wonderful overview of Joseph Hadyn’s influence as Music director. This influence carried over from the Palace throughout the town of Eisenstadt, particularly in the Local church, named in his honour. Eisenstadt was easily accessed from Vienna by train.Written 2 October 2019
- Nancy L0 contributionsSmall but charmingI was in Eisenstadt for a classical music festival and had a wonderful time listening to musicians from all over the world. Haydn worked there! No AC, but we survived.Written 11 September 2019
- mrcurlywhirly0 contributionsExcellent palace tourEsterhazy Palace is a highly recommended day trip. We allowed a full day to tour the old village, palace and palace gardens, opting for a day train ticket from Vienna @34.7 euros (per couple) - which covers all REX trains for 24hrs. The trip to Einstadt is around an hour and a quarter from Vienna HBF on the REX, which scoots along very quickly through the wind turbine littered countryside, the palace is a 15 minute walk up the hill from Einstadt station. We chose a combination ticket (20 Euros) to view the palace, which included a very informative tour, and viewing of the various exhibitions - one covering the tragic history of Melinda Esterhazy. The old village is also well worth the visit, with many little cafes serving the local delicacies - ie chocolate layered cake, cake, and more cake, then coffee. Walk it off with a pleasant loop through the palace park.Written 8 April 2019
- ivornjen0 contributionsA great day outEsterhazy ticket office staff and guide were both really helpful. The enthusiasm is palpable and infectious. We were fortunate to have Charlotte guide us through the Palace - warm and theatrical, she really added value to this unique experience. We bought the combined ticket for the Palace tour and other exhibitions. Cost was 20 euros each plus 2 euros per camera to take photos inside. We were moved by the Melinda Esterhazy story and the self-guided exhibition is evocative - came out wrung out by the wartime experience. We were lucky to go through quietly without being crowded. We travelled easily by train about 1 hour 20 minutes from Vienna - 34 euros for a couple for one day from any OBB station. Bus from the train station at Eisenstadt to Esterhazy is a further 3 euros, but we elected to walk the 15 minutes up the hill to the Palace.Written 8 April 2019
- apdemas0 contributionsDo the Haydn ExplosivIf you're a classical music fan, then this is definitely a must-visit. We did the Haydn Ticket, and it was well worth it. The performance hall is beautiful and well-maintained, and it was interesting to read a bit about the last Prince and Princess Esterhazy. The Haydn Explosiv is both fascinating and hilariously weird. They've got excellent pieces from Haydn's past, including old sheet music, instruments from the 1700s, and explanations for both the historical context and the music itself. And then there's the decor, which can't really be described, it can only be seen. Logistical Information-it's about a 5 minute walk from the bus stop, there's plenty of English in the captions, and you do have to pay an extra 2 Euros to take pictures.Written 7 April 2019
- Caroline C0 contributionsWorth it for the Haydn SaalThe Haydn Saal is beautiful and well worth a visit as is the guided tour of the state rooms. But please please give the new Haydn exhibition a miss. It’s awful! Totally baffling and gives no insight or feeling for Haydn’s life and music. The walls and floor have been decorated with some psychedelic patterns which is totally out of keeping with the rest of the palace. The exhibits are strange and not original. There’s no ‘flow’ so you don’t know where to go or where to start. Don’t bother!Written 5 September 2018
- William C0 contributionsWine museumAs wine lovers, we did the underground tour through the cellars. It was interesting to discover more about the history of wine-making in the area. Eisenstadt has lots of vineyards around. Lovely park to walk around and the town is very quaint.Written 27 August 2018

Haydn worked for 30 years at Esterhazy Palace, composing and conducting. It was an excellent experience to visit where he worked, particularly Haydn Hall, and the museum in the palace. We took the self-guided Haydn tour, much interesting historical information about Haydn and the Esterhazy family. We took the train from Vienna, about 1.25 hours, then a taxi to the palace. Very worthwhile day trip!

The guide was excellent and happy to answer any questions. There was also an interesting exhibition on the history of Jewish settlement.

Nice day trip from Vienna. Beautiful village on the border with Hungary, Eisenstadt has a nice old town with period houses that are worth a walk.
At the beginning of the "course", stands the Esterhazy palace, which is definitely worth a visit, would be better guided because the audio guides do not offer explanations in Italian (hence the reason for the 3 stars).
It is very interesting to visit the basement of the palace that houses the wine museum.
The castle does not offer furniture to admire, some paintings, some musical instruments, but not to be missed is the Haydn theater
Visit a little disappointing because there are rooms that without a guide you can not visit.
