What to expect
Eagle’s Nest Begin your tour in central Salzburg, where you’ll meet up with your guide and venture through the Bavarian Mountains aboard your coach. Travel past Untersberg Mountain, featured in the opening and final scenes of The Sound of Music. Enjoy the stunning landscape of the Alps as you journey to Germany’s Obersalzberg, where the former mountain retreat of Hitler is located. Shoot up to the top of the mountain in an original brass elevator, where you'll witness incredible views the countryside stretched out before you. Afterward, take a 45-minute break to purchase lunch at one of the nearby restaurants before rejoining with your guide for the second part of your tour. Salt Mines After a relaxing lunch, explore the salt mines situated beneath Obersalzberg. Slip on authentic mining wear and travel down into the grottos on the same slide used by the miners. Discover the underground world dating back 450 years, and learn about the mines' rich history and the stories of its workers. Sail across the scenic salt lake and enjoy a train ride before ascending back to the surface. Continue to Königssee, a glacial lake situated among the surrounding mountains. Soak up some free time to explore the area on your own before stopping at the town of Berchtesgaden to roam the streets and local shops. Your tour will conclude with transportation back to Salzburg.

Even though the weather wasn’t good for us we still had a good time learning the history history of Salzburg. The kids loved it! 7 and 9yo hiking around Eagles Nest and the slides of the salt mines. If you don’t have children the salt mines aren’t that great, definitely could skip. Eagles nest thought we would learn or see more but again the kids loved it! And we stopped by a beautiful town, hiked around the lake, took so many gorgeous family scenic pictures!

Eagle's Nest, Salt Mine and King's Lake
I want to thank Leo for being our tour guide. He is a fantastic guide who presented the information on all areas (Eagle's Nest, Salt Mine and King's Lake) in an informative, factual, courteous and humorous manner. Many laughs. Eagle's Nest has awe inspiring 360 degree views. There was a little cloud cover being mid-October, but it added to the visual experience and photo effect. It did not hinder the views in any way. I could see how heavy cloud cover would, but we did not experience that. Eagle's Nest itself smaller than I originally imagined, but the true beauty is outside. Leo was very attentive and kept the tour on time always double checking to ensure he left no one behind. I enjoyed having many one on one conversations with him. I consider him a friend. The Salt Mine is a neat experience being deep underground. It is still an operational mine, but you are nowhere near any of the operations. You take a ride in on a small train and then walk through the rest with a handheld audio guide. Near the end you travel across a small brine pond on float raft. You also get to taste the salt water (brine). Dip your fingers. It's definitely salty, but pure in taste. After this we went to King's Lake and walked out to the Lake itself which is about a 15-20 walk. Absolutely beautiful! There souvenir shops at all locations. We picked up a memento at Eagle's Nest, a package of salt from the mine take back home with us and a Bavarian Flag at King's Lake. It's a 9 hour full day tour, but worth every penny!

Thanks again Leo,

Paul (Captain Danger) and Anna

The Eagles Nest was jammed packed so not much time to actually get around the area. But it was interesting and we had Walter as our guide for the day who was great. Loved the Salt Mines !!! I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was a lot of fun ( got to go down two slides, a train and little boat ) and our guide Patrick was just the BEST !! He was informative, interesting and very witty. You are even given miners jumpsuits to wear while on the tour. Had a great time ! No cameras are allowed during the tour.

Interesting and scenic
Sep 2019
We honestly didn't look too much into the full details of this tour, and were pleasantly surprised by all aspects of it! We ended up having two different tour guides and drivers, and all were great (some tour goers were on the half-day tour, so we switched buses at the salt mine to continue the tour). The Eagle's Nest was cloudy and crowded, but it was clear on the drive up so we had good views from the bus at least. Leaving the Eagle's Nest to get back down to the buses was a little bit of confusing mess, since so many people were trying to utilize the elevator at once. The elevator operated was not happy. We stopped at a picturesque town (forget the name), and I wish we had just a little bit more time there to enjoy (maybe we would have, if exiting the Eagle's Nest wasn't so crazy?). Next, we were dropped off at the salt mines, which was surprisingly educational and fun. We had no idea what this part of the tour entailed, but all enjoyed it! Underground trains, boats, slides...need I say more? (Do not do the salt mine if you are claustrophobic.) After the the salt mine, we went to King's Lake and had plenty of time to walk/easy hike to a very scenic viewpoint and then hang out in the little town (I think the only people who go there are tourists). All of our guides & drivers were personable, informative, and friendly. I would definitely recommend a tour with Panorama Tours when in Salzburg!

Great trip to Eagles Nest.
Jun 2019
What a wonderful day, 38 degrees at bottom of the mountains, then we have a spectacular bus ride up to a Eagles Nest and we had snow covered mountains and breathtaking views, learnt some interesting facts about Hitler and his meeting place.
in Bavaria.
I was a bit hesitant about doing salt mine tour, but it was fantastic, as a senior I’m still amazed I slide down the slide, hanging on for my life to my sister, we still laugh about it.
The blue water of the Kings Lake, beautiful. Loved every part of this tour.

I don't often sign up for these types of tours, but would absolutely sign up with Panorama again. Our tour guide was very friendly, funny, and full of fun facts. We enjoyed the eagles nest, were pleasantly surprised by the salt mine tour and really loved the kings lake.

Had plenty of time to stroll around and drink a beer with new found friends.

Great destinations, shame about the guide.
With guided tours, the tour guide has an enormous impact on how enjoyable a tour is ... unlike the amazing Sound of Music tour we did the previous day with the fabulous David, our guide on this tour wasn't great. Sadly the weather was dreadful early on with rain and the Eagles Nest shrouded in cloud which obviously nobody can control but our guide Walter didn't help the mood. He has obviously been guiding this tour for a long time and is over it. He did crack a few jokes but as our bus pulled out of the last stop, heading back to Salzburg he announced that this was the trip he'd been waiting for all day!! Time to retire Walter!! Australian travellers be warned, Walter doesn't seem to like Aussies much, even though (or perhaps because?) he lived in Australia for 30 years!! He was very unfriendly and made some comment about us being convicts!! Sadly his commentary was recited by rote at machine gun speed in both English and German - difficult to follow especially when others in the bus talked non stop throughout! On the previous days tour, at the beginning, David requested people to please be respectful of others and not talk during his commentary as we'd all paid a lot for the tour. Bravo David! Today's tour was more than double the price and we missed half of the commentary!

Despite all of this, the places visited were fabulous and definitely worth seeing. The salt mine was great fun!We did feel very rushed ... "hurry up, hurry up" ... so that we could wait ... again more likely due to our guide. Our driver Ivor was absolutely lovely ... very friendly. Do the tour but just cross your fingers that you don't get Walter as your guide!

Hello, thank you for your message and taking time writing us a detailed feedback! We are really happy to hear how much you enjoyed our Original Sound of Music Tour®. Nevertheless we are sorry the Eagle's Nest Tour was not quite what you expected and we also regret that the weather was not at it's best - which is beyond our control. Yet the historical impact and background information makes this most popular tour still worth a trip, as you mentioned the places are fabulous. True, Walter guides the Bavarian Mountains Tour since many years. We are very pleased and proud that our guides are such well experienced providing for great views making us top-rated tour operator on TripAdvisor. Therefore age is definitely not an issue among our staff - quality only, and addressing somebody as being over it is not quite fair. We regret you did not enjoy the guide and his jokes and moreover also having difficulties hearing him as other guests on board were talking - an issue we will address in our next team meeting. Once again thank you for your feedback and we hope we get another chance to welcome you on board again some day! With best regards, your Salzburg Panorama Tours team

Excellent!
We loved this tour! We felt that we had plenty of time at each place and did not have to rush. Each stop was very different from the other, but we enjoyed each one. Our tour guide and bus driver were great! Our tour guide gave us just enough info throughout the tour. He did not talk to much to bore us, but it was not too little either. Due to weather, the Eagle' Nest was not as clear as we hoped, but they cannot control the weather. That's just a chance you take. Overall, it was a great day!
