What to expect
  • There are few more images iconic to Hawaii than a waterfall spilling through the rain forest, and on this scenic Waipio waterfall tour, you have the chance to view some of the best, most famous waterfalls in Hawaii.  The tour begins when you’re picked up directly from your Kona or Waikoloa hotel, where you drive towards historic Waipio Valley through the pasture lands of Parker Ranch. Upon arrival in Honoka’a, admire the small, old school atmosphere before boarding a 4-wheel drive vehicle, to explore a part of the Hawaiian Islands that’s known as the Valley of Kings. Navigate the rugged valley terrain towards the base of Hi’ilawe Falls, and stand amidst taro falls with an unforgettable view of the island’s tallest waterfall.  Having craned your neck to take in the falls, journey back up towards the top of the valley to the Waipio Valley Lookout, where you soon enjoy a lunch of teriyaki chicken, grilled fish, seaweed salad, and rice (vegetarian meals available upon request). Relax on the serpentine drive to Hilo along the Hamakua Coast, before emerging at thundering Akaka Falls and its staggering drop. If weather permits, you get to swim and kayak under a private waterfall to cool down after a short hike. Next move over to Rainbow Falls, where the angle of light can often create a colorful rainbow in the mist. Descent into an ancient lava cave to learn more about the volcanic processes that continue to shape the Big Island. The drive back to Kona is an adventure in itself, as you travel the infamous Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, climbing to high on the frigid, windswept moonscape. In winter, it’s common for both mountains to be covered with snow, and eventually, drop back down towards Kona for a drop off back at your hotel.

Amazing Day in Hawaii
It was worth the price because of the places we visited and didn’t have to worry about the long drive with the drive to the valley. It is such an amazing experience to go up close and see nature. The tour guides are very helpful with the history. The lookout was amazing. The private waterfall and the hike down there is wonderful seeing the waterfall up close. The Akaka falls is beautiful. The long drives are long but worth paying for someone to drive you back and forth. Would recommend. Not a lot of walking so this is easy. The cave is just kinda steep but otherwise not hard at all.

Gorgeous sights and a knowledgeable guide
We took the waterfall tour with Derek Stuart who was great. The sites selected were gorgeous, and Derek has excellent knowledge of the island. It’s clear he enjoys his work and we learned a lot and got a lot of great pictures. My favorite site was Akaka Falls. Just incredible and I’m not sure we would have visited had we not signed up for this tour. We also had a great stop at Waipi’o valley and our guide for that part - Douglas - was hilarious and showed us some specular vistas as well. We signed up for a second tour with Wasabi in a couple of days and are feeling pretty good about that choice having taken this tour.

Martin the turtle, best guide ever
Sep 2021 • Couples
Martin the turtle was awesome! Very informational and educational but not in a boring history teacher way, more like a funny comedian way. Had a great time with the whole group. Everything was beautiful and the private waterfall was just amazing!

Dreu was great
Sep 2021
Dreu was our tour guide and he was amazing! Very knowledgable about the history of the land and the culture, along with all of the sites we visited and the vegetation. It was like talking to a historian, but full of energy and enthusiasm! A very memorable experience for sure, would definitely recommend this tour to a friend. Be prepared for a long day and bring snacks and plenty of sunscreen. Very enjoyable and grateful for this adventure!

Magical!
Sep 2021 • Friends
This tour was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend. I loved seeing the different parts of the island and we saw so many waterfalls that I lost count.

Drew was an incredibly energetic, knowledgable, funny, and accommodating tour guide. Douglas was very informative and friendly too. They really went above and beyond to make the tours extra special for us.

In addition to the waterfalls, we got to see a lava tube cave, wild horses, and lots of plants/flowers/fruit. Plus, the lunch was a delicious bento box.

Thanks for showing us the magic of the Big Island - I’ll always cherish these memories!

Culture, waterfalls and adventure
Sep 2021 • Friends
Such an amazing day full of beautiful views, interesting history and adventures. Our group had an absolutely awesome time with Dreu who was super knowledgeable about the Big Island and it’s history. Waipio valley was a sight to behold and every other stop along the way gave you insight into Hawaiian culture. Highly recommend repelling down the 120 ft waterfall for an added bit of adrenaline. I would recommend this tour for anyone looking for an authentic taste of Hawaii. It is a great way to get away from the resorts and see the rainforest side of the island.
