Overview
Just off the Kapiti Coast is Kapiti Island, a bird and nature sanctuary free of predators and pests. This overnight experience offers the one-of-a-kind opportunity to stay overnight on the otherwise uninhabited island. Try one of the island’s many walking tracks and spot native birds in the canopy. Later, enjoy a chef-prepared meal in your luxury accommodation and then head out with your guide to look for New Zealand’s endangered, nocturnal national icon - the kiwi.
What to Expect
Your ferry departs daily from Paraparaumu Beach, roughly 1-hour drive north of Wellington City. You can choose to board the ferry at 9am, and return at the same time the next day.

On arrival you will be greeted by your experienced nature guide who will tell you stories of Kapiti Island's incredibly rich human and conservation history - from heroic Maori warriors to some of the world’s first dedicated conservationists.

Walking paths on Kapiti Island are well marked, and vary in difficulty from easy 1-hour flat walks to more demanding 3-4-hour hill climbs to stunning views. Wherever you choose to walk you'll be surrounded by a huge range of endemic New Zealand bird life.

Meals and accommodation are based at the Lodge - an intimate experience with a small number of guests. The chef selects local wine, beer, and produce to create an unforgettable dining experience (all included in price).

After dinner you embark on a night walk through grassland and bush, led by an experienced Kiwi spotting guide, to try and spot a wild Kiwi bird in its natural habitat. This is one of the most successful, easy, and enjoyable Kiwi spotting experiences in the world. Under a night sky undimmed by light pollution you can enjoy the sights and sounds of wild New Zealand by night.

An awesome visit for birds and bush

Great hospitality, meals and guiding at night for Little spotted kiwi by our friendly hosts. To see many NZ's birds singing and in flight, as it use to be before rats and cats came along. A sheer delight to our visiting group.

You'll want to stay overnight!

Contrary to previous reviews, you should expect changing conditions on a daily basis as part of traveling. The weather can change, the ocean conditions can change so don't be disappointed if your boat trip to the island is cancelled. Just reschedule if you have the...More

Kiwis and kakas and takahes, oh my!

What an amazing island! Seas were a bit rough and the 10 to 15 minute ride over from the mainland was a bit bumpy (not at all dangerous, just enough to be exciting). The super-tall tractor that pulls the boat into the water is really...More
