Overview
Explore the volcanic terrain of Rangitoto Island aboard a 4WD tractor-pulled tram on this half-day guided tour. Depart Auckland for Rangitoto on a ferry ride across the Hauraki Gulf, and be rewarded with 360-degree views of the water and city skyline after a short walk to the island’s summit. During your 2-hour off-road adventure, hear commentary about the island’s history, geology and rich plant life, including the largest preserved pohutukawa forest in the world.
What to Expect
Take in the spectacular lava fields and natural beauty of Rangitoto Island, starting with a 25-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. On arrival, hop into a 4WD tractor-pulled tram for a guided 2-hour tour of the volcanic island.

As you traverse rugged lava fields, an informative guide narrates Rangitoto’s volcanic origins and geology. Discover the island’s thriving plant life — around 200 species of moss, plants and trees, including the largest pohutukawa forest in the world.

Upon reaching the base of the summit, it’s a moderate half-mile (.8-km) walk along a wooden boardwalk to reach the top, where you’re rewarded with a panorama of the Auckland skyline and the Hauraki Gulf.

Afterward, rejoin the tram to explore the island’s western side, passing modest 1920s beach homes called bachs, and possibly glimpsing obsolete ships left to decay on the island’s hidden shores. Your tour ends with a return ferry ride to Auckland.

Unfortunately due to windy and weather conditions, this excursion had to be cancelled. They could not dock in the allotted area so had to go around the island to another side and hike in to an outlook point. We were advised that this was not...More

Great views, loved the birds

We rode the ferry over to Rangitoto, only about 40 minutes. Upon arrival, we were greeted by our 4wd tractor driver and guide, Bob. Bob was a goldmine of information about the island history, geology, birds, and plants. After winding around close to the volcanic...More

Loved visiting Rangitoto. The tour was well coordinated. Narinder was our tour guide and he was great in providing history and information of the volcanic island. The ferry from Auckland was slightly delayed so that reduced the time we had to spend on the island...More

A Splendiferous Way To Spend A Day While In Auckland!

I booked this trip and is a half day tour, very inexpensive, but a great one to embark on. The island's not that far from downtown Auckland, only about 25 minutes by Fullers ferry, and they only make 1 stop at Devonport for about 5...More

Informative and well worth the trip!

We thoroughly enjoyed the trip to the summit of Rangitoto Volcano. The unique means by which we reached the base was new and innovative and the walk to the summit was easy for a middle aged couple of fair fitness.
